“Not bad but not really for couples (or Brits!)”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

We stayed here for a week from 30 August - 6th September this year, booked it a few weeks before after reading some good reviews of the value and location. We were all inclusive. Its a huge complex of blocks which spreads over a large street (in fact pretty much all of the street is either the Protur Floriana or the Bahia Azul hotel / apartment across the road). Our room was very spacious with a large area for sitting with 2 sofa beds, large bathroom with a bath and separate shower and a very big bedroom with ample wardrobe / storage space. The balcony was also very big. For the accommodation the value was excellent. Unfortunately there were a lot of elements about the rest of the hotel that would put me off returning. the overwhelming problem was that 98% of the guests were German and also had children under 5 years. I have nothing against children - I am a Mum - but this really needs to advertised as a family only hotel. You couldnt move in the dining areas for children running around seemingly without any adult keeping an eye on them. 2 out of the 3 sun bathing areas with swimming pools were packed solid with families and children - to the point where you could hardly navigate your way safely around them and when eating lunch or dinner outside, you had to be careful the back of your chair didnt knock someones head who was laying on a sunlounger 5 centimeters away!

The food was OK - the Grill area was better and less busy however there wasnt enough seating outside. The main dining restaurant was very busy at all times and had a school dinner atmosphere. The food was very repititive and most of it was not labelled in English. Everything was self service (including coffee and tea in the morning which was out of a machine). Not great at all. I mean how expensive can it really be to actually make pots of fresh coffee and boil up pots of water to serve at breakfast? Wine, beer and all soft drinks were on draft at various machines dotted around the restaurants and bar area but drinking wine out of plastic cup is a bit 'holiday camp' for me. In fact I have hit the nail on the head it was like Butlins abroad.

The resort is lovely - Cala Bona Marina has lovely views out to sea and there are plenty of bars and restaurants to chill out and have a few drinks in. Prices were very reasonable and the service outside the hotel was excellent wherever we went.

I would return to Cala Bona but not to stay at the Floriana, much prefer the GranSol, Levante or Levente Park down along the coastline. More expensive but I believe you get what you pay for.

Room Tip: Use the pool area at the far end of Block H - much quieter and still across the road from the Bar an...

As others have said hotel is nice, staff friendly, ok location not far to walk to Cala Bona or Cala Millor. We travelled with a 3 year old and unfortunately neither he nor ourselves could join in the activities within the hotel or speak with the other guests as the other guests were all German. From what we could see, the activities are really good and the kids club looks good too. However, everything within the hotel and the notice boards are in German so its difficult to see what's going on if you can't read German. We will also be making a formal complaint to Thomson as they should make guests aware of this before travel. The Thomson rep, who turned up 3 days into our holiday, was not really sympathetic and said that Thomson don't need to give this information. We were self catering so unfortunately can't comment on the restaurant or quality of food. However, the bar staff are nice and gave us free drinks a couple of times. We were in G block, which is away from the evening entertainment and you can't hear it from there. Cala Bona and Cala Millor are both lovely with plenty of restaurants and bars with entertainment. The beach is much better in Cala Millor so its worth the extra 10 minute walk through. I would go back to Cala Bona but would opt for the Bahia Azul rather than the Floriana, mainly for our son so he could make friends. We went through to Sa Coma a couple of times and there are some nice hotels through there and the beach is good. The bus service is really good and less than 2 Euro. Overall we had a great holiday but it would have been good if our son could have made some friends within the hotel as he really tried but the language barrier proved to be a problem.

Room Tip: We were in G block which had its own pool that was quiet and plenty of sunbeds.

I won't go into too much detail about the hotel as other reviewers have said it all (nice, clean hotel and rooms, good size pools, great location, friendly and helpful staff etc.). However just a few things that might be useful to know if you're a family with young children (ours were 3 and 6 on travelling):

The hotel is part of a German owned chain (Protur), and must have had around 95% German guests while we were there. Not a problem as such, but we were very disappointed to find that the Kids Club and kids evening disco (both of which our children enjoy getting involved with usually) was all in German. This meant that our kids did not get involved in either of these things at all throughout our 11 night stay which was shame. We are writing to Thomson to issue a formal complaint that this is not made clear in their brochures/website as this would have possibly influenced our choice of hotel.

By chance we came across a brilliant little hotel literally a minute's walk down the road from the Floriana called the Bahia Azul (another Protur hotel) but was occupied by Brits and our children were able to make some friends - happy kids, happy parents! Fantastic pool bar - generous lunches at a very reasonable price. The pool was great - not huge but at a good level for our children (not too deep, but enough of a challenge for them!). Would highly recommend this place although as it's a small complex I would assume it gets quite busy in the pool at height of the season?

Also it's worth knowing that Cala Bona beach is not really very nice - man-made with bits of sharp pebbledash type stones in the sand and shore which wasn't nice to walk on or build sandcastles with. The sea was good for a bit of snorkelling, particularly in the lagoon area but spend 5 euros in a taxi (our little ones weren't up for the walk!) to take you to the very end of Cala Millor beach and it's a different story. The most beautiful soft white sand and crystal clear water which is shallow so great for the kids. 4 euro's for a sunbed, another 4 for an umbrella if you need one. All money well worth spending for a fantastic day on the beach.

We would definitely go back to Cala Bona again as it's a great family resort but are looking into staying at the Bahia Azul instead purely for some of the reasons mentioned above.

Room Tip: We were on the ground floor originally but asked to change rooms after a night of hearing footsteps...

We were a group of two couples aged 65-71 sharing a 1 bed apartment staying 30th Aug-13th September 2013. Lots of space and two very good comfortable sofa beds in lounge plus separate twin bedroom. Apartments were very clean with modern bathroom. We were in G block on top floor (room 2457) which gave lovely views from back and front of apartment. There is a lift. This block had its own pool and was in a quieter location than the other buildings. Cala Bona beach is small and about 10mins walk away. Its not the best beach around but Cala Millor beach is only another 10 mins walk. There is a bus which runs quite frequently to Cala Millor. Sa Coma is also a short bus ride away.
These resorts are very family orientated and there are many families staying at this hotel but as we stayed late in August and were away from the main pool/entertainment area the noise etc was minimum. We were self-catering so unable to comment on food in hotel, but found some very good eating places. The Rope & Anchor down by the harbour had great food with lots vegetables with their meals. You had a choice of veg or salad with every meal. Good friendly service too! We spent most of our evenings at the Sanddancers Karaoke bar where Faz, Tracey and Faz Deen junior entertained/served you. Great family!! Faz senior runs a great Karaoke and his sense of humour and appreciation to his customers are second to none! Thanks for a great time Faz, Tracey and Faz junior and enjoy your winter break.
Maria's family bar/cafeteria close to Floriana was good too as was Yates where the quiz master was quite a character.

Room Tip: If you want to be away from this hotels activities etc around main pool then request top floor (no n...

Stayed here for 2 weeks . Disastrous start to holiday as plane had cracked screen so after checking in at one airport had to check back out and get on coach to airport 2 1/2 hrs away to recheck in !! Arrived at Palma early hours of morning instead of 9pm at night. Another hour on coach to floriana which took us to 330 am!! Consequently we were very tired and disorientated. The man on reception was waiting for us with a smile and checked us in quickly. We were then taken in golf style buggy to our apartment in block E by lovely man who carried cases up 2 flights of stairs! We stayed on self catering basis and had spacious clean apartment and pleasant balcony where we used to have breakfast in the sun. After that we would use the pool in block G which was pleasant and less crowded than the other 2 pools, the sun came out about 11am which was fine as it meant you didn't have to go too early to get a bed. All the staff, from waiters to the cleaning staff were pleasant and efficient. At night we would stroll down to the harbour for our evening meal, as there are a vast amount of bars and restaurants to choose from. We ate a lot at bar melis, but tried other restaurants and always ended up in argos bar where there was always a warm welcome from Peter and Petra the hard working bar staff. Quiz night three times weekly and costs nothing to enter but prizes given for winners losers and original team names. As it is only 10 minutes walk to the harbour from floriana it is convenient enough for bars etc but not too noisy after hours. Cala bona is much quiter than cala millor and is a lovely resort. Would stay here again. Entertainment was provided at Floriana by the animation team but as we only saw one night and comedy was basically aimed at British minority we didn't watch again. Thomson rep is based in Bahia azul which is just opposite floriana and apparently all British clientele! The majority of clients staying At Floriana were German, but we didn't find this a problem and would stay here again. Thanks to reception and cleaning and gardener' s who do a great job and always speak to customers.

Room Tip: We didn't ask for specific room but you can change if not happy, as we saw customers asking to c...

My wife and I stayed at the Protur Floriana Resort on a self catering basis for 11 nights between August 6th and 17th with our daughter and her friend (two females in their early 20's). We were located in Block G which was peaceful and quiet with its own pool (including a children's section) and had no issue getting sun beds; the literature asked for beds not to be reserved before 09:00 and on the whole there weren't many beds reserved before 08:00. The pool and sun terrace for block G was to the west of the apartment block and therefore was in the shade until 11:00 but allowed for sunbathing into the early evening. We didn't use the other two pools within the complex; these were possibly more aesthetically pleasing freeform shaped pools but also appeared to be very busy. We were in room 2057 which was a fairly modern one bedroom apartment with 2 sofa beds in the living area; the twin beds had been pushed together to form a very large double and we found them to be very comfortable. According to the girls the sofa-beds were also comfortable but would not accommodate anyone taller than 5' 6". The apartment and surrounding areas were kept spotlessly clean by an army of cleaners and maintenance staff. The kitchen was basic but sufficient for our breakfast/lunch requirements, having two electric rings, microwave and fridge (but no oven); for our main meals we ate out every day and there's plenty of choice to do so. Our room was on the ground floor and benefited from a large balcony that overlooked the sun terrace. The air-con in the room was also very good but only if the patio doors to the balcony were closed. On the whole those on reception were helpful and friendly (although one lady was a little less so) The grounds within the complex were all extremely well maintained with lots of grass, trees and flowers and the area around the complex was residential and quiet (with the exception of a cockerel that crowed at 03:30 every morning). The complex was just a five minute walk to the harbour area of Cala Bona and another 10 minutes to the beginning of Cala Millor, there are plenty of supermarkets (Spars and a BIP) within 10 minutes of the complex. The two girls sometimes had breakfast at the Argos (on the waterfront just south of the harbour) which I also visited to watch football and rugby league. The harbour area is a wonderful location in the morning for a gentle stroll and in the evening for a meal. Our favourite place to eat was Janet & John's overlooking the harbour (don't let the name fool you into thinking this is just a British eatery in a foreign location); the menu was wide and varied, the food was excellent and great value. We can also recommend the Sunset Bar and Forty's on the promenade going south towards Cala Millor. I can't comment on the entertainment or food within the Floriana complex itself because I only ever intended to use the apartment as a base in order to sample some of the many restaurants in Cala Bona. Just be aware of the red cycle track that is in the centre of the pedestrianised promenade running along the whole length of the Cala Bona/Cala Millor seafront; this appears to be popular with tourists and locals and is used by people on segways and motorised scooters as well as bicycles and 4 person cycle buggies. In summary we enjoyed our stay at the Protur Floriana as it provided us with all we needed for a wonderfully relaxing self-catering holiday.
