“Just Lacking the Wow Factor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2014

Just returned from a week at this very competent and functional hotel.
Having read previous reviews, I would echo all comments made by Philip J on 21/09/2013, and so will not go over old ground.
The clientele for this hotel are predominantly German, and the staff have trouble with English. OK if you like to keep yourself to yourself, but isolating otherwise. To a large extent this reflects the southern end of cala millor as well. The restaurant is outstanding, and is 5 star (if a buffet can ever really be 5 star), but the rest of the hotel just lacks anything to say wow about. There are no views (nearly all the rooms overlook overgrown and litter strewn waste ground), and there is a road that runs through the hotel and separates the main hotel with the swimming pool, so the grounds feels detached. The pool area itself if decidedly average in layout. Also, there are none of the “special little touches” that one comes to expect when paying well above the normal price (even no bottled water in room). So as I say, entirely functional and a good base to explore from, but we were disappointed as for a “top end” hotel, there was nothing at all to say wow about. In summary, nothing wrong to jump up and down about, but we honestly wouldn't return to this Hotel as we like to be wowed.

Room Tip: Only suites overlooking pool have any views,

Just returned from a two week stay at this hotel. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left it was first class. Reception staff warmly welcomed us with a drink and we were quickly taken to our rooms. Nice bright rooms looking towards the pool area with massive balconies.
All the staff at the hotel are helpful and friendly at all times. The food is excellent with an enormous variety at both breakfast and dinner. We were always welcomed into the dining room and it had a very good atmosphere. The hotel is spotlessly clean in all areas and the grounds well cared for. The pool area is lovely with sun beds and sun umbrellas well spaced for comfort. Thank you to all staff for a lovely stay.

We enjoyed our stay at the Hippocampo Palace for 6 nights. Breakfast buffet is very good, items replenished regularly and an excellent choice to cater for everyone. Rooms are clean and comfortable, although the bed could be softer. Nice to have a balcony to enjoy a drink during the evening. Location is at one end of Cala Millor, but still only a 5 minute walk to restaurants and shops etc. Nice indoor spa too.

To me, '5 star' means reception staff will go out of their way to help you with any questions or issues. Reception staff were often too busy to help, and I was offended by the rude, dismissive attitude of one of them one morning when I needed assistance.

Cleanliness-wise, yes, it was definitely 5 star, but service is what matters most to me, so I do not feel like I got my money's worth for such a big spend.

Location - hidden away at the south end of Cala Millor beach. Next to an overgrown vacant lot.

Other guests - they could do well to attract a mix of nationalities, as I felt that I was the only one in the resort that couldn't speak German. One guest continued to glare at me during breakfast one morning from another table - it's a mystery as to why. I felt neither comfortable nor particularly welcome there in general, which I found quite odd considering I was a paying customer like everyone else.

This hotel is perfect. The surroundings, the view from our balcony was breath taking. The rooms are so clean and highly maintained. Not forgetting the delicious food and the excellent dinner gala held every friday evening. The hotel also offers various evening entertainment, hence no need to go out to other places in the night. Will call back in the near future.

We've just got back from a 4 night stay, this was our second stay at the hotel.

Very pleased to report that we had another excellent stay. The level of service from the staff is excellent, the food is excellent too and you are spoilt for choice. To give you some idea of what is available, I had steaks, calf's liver, venison, rabbit, calamares, sea bream, sole.... all cooked on the grill to my liking, the chefs are very helpful and do a great job.

We had a room on the third floor overlooking the garden with a sea view, it had a large balcony too. It was a shame that the weather wasn't brilliant for us to make better use of it.

I can't praise this hotel enough, and look forward to returning.

palatial hotel, good service, Nice comfortable rooms, but normal double room had two single beds pushed together, option of true double bed was not offered.

Outside swimming pool was rather cold in late October and early November. Inside pool was part of a spa complex and was heated
Restaurant was open for breakfast and dinner. Snacks and light meals available at other times in bar and sitting rooms. Food buffet style, with steaks, fish etc griddled while you wait. Extensive variety of food well cooked and beautifully presented On the whole restaurant very good indeed.

Good wine list with good number of good Mallorcan wines and also a selection of fine wines from other major wine regions of Spain
