“good but needs up date!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

Beautiful old building, nicely situated, service friendly, but the rooms and the restaurant need an up date!!!!does not have to cost a lot as the base is good but bathrooms are too old, as other 4 star paradors give bathrobes and slippers here nothing, sheets and towels a little 'old'...restaurant was surprisingly good ( and very friendly staff) but the whole decoration should be re done...a pitty that these details are not taken care of, it looks now a little 'run down'

This Parador was conveniently located with a nice historical feel to it. There are no parking facilities, so if you have a car you will have to find curbside parking down the road. We were apprehensive about this but in fact we never had a problem finding a space within a few minutes' walk from the hotel. We were also apprehensive when we were assigned our superior room on the ground floor, right behind the reception desk and just off the main lobby, especially as there was a meeting in progress and the lobby was set up for a reception. When we asked to change to a room on a higher floor, the desk clerk told us that no other superior rooms were available and that the door between the lobby and the hallway to our room would be kept closed. He assured us that we would not be bothered by traffic or guest noise and he turned out to be right: the room was reasonably quiet except for the annoying music being played by the tourist tram when it was parked outside the hotel (we noticed these trams with their loud and insipid music in a number of locations in Andalusia and found them to be an eyesore -- and an earsore). Our room was large, comfortable and adequately furnished. Breakfast, which was included in our rate, was ample and enjoyable. The prior two reviewers noted less than enthusiastic service at this Parador. Our interaction with the desk clerk when we asked about the possibility of a room change fell into this category: not particularly rude or dismissive, but hardly accommodating (think service in Eastern Europe when countries were under Communist rule). However, service in the restaurant was generally much better than at the front desk.

Paradors are the only accommodation one should stay at in Spain and this was no exception.
Situated in the middle of town and close to restaurants. It was an old place with lovely central lounge. Breakfast was good with a variety of options.

It goes without saying that the building is beautifully placed and restored if rather pricey. Once you find it and sort out your parking you can explore the surrounding old city at ease from here, most things are within a short walking distance assuming you can get past the tasty patellerias!

The room 118 overlooked the plaza and you can see the cathedral from the bedroom, quiet location, comfortable room, although let down by twin rather than double room requested. I was extremely surprised at the poor quality of tiling in the bathroom, the surface was pin holed and obvious second quality, which is very disappointing considering the prices for the stay and Spain's reputation for high quality ceramics.

Breakfast was expensive and a dull experience, the staff at breakfast were the most friendly and helpful. As for the reception staff and the general experience, less than happy, not discourteous but distant if not a little haughty, we are humans please interact with us as such!

Room Tip: Try for a front of building outlook and avoid communal courtyards especially at ground floor.

Stayed 2 nites at end of Sept. Room we had overlooked private walled garden shared with three other rooms. Room itself was OK but getting very close to refurb time and clearly left the cleaning staff with some problems as a result. Eat Parador lunch, which was excellent (quality was more related to their ability to purchase good ingredients rather than cook anything since we had an excellent plate of local hams). Dinner we also stayed in, but we found was extremely average and served by somewhat reluctant staff. Ironically, for us the employee of our stay was a young waiter at lunch who was running around serving both bar, terrace and lobby area guests with huge enthusiasm whilst dinner had many waiters sullenly serving a just few guests.

Second nite we found local restaurant within two minutes of the Hotel (Antique) with young enthusiastic chef who offered inventive food, leaving the Parador offering looking worse still. Breakfast at the Parador is a buffet and, similar to our lunch experience, there is little input from the kitchen since most offerings are prepared from good cold basic local ingredients or purchased packets (fortunately!)

Building itself could be glorious, but Paradores think stuffing it with some elderly tired furniture and potted plants that most private gardeners would be ashamed to own, constitute period decor. Many Hotels are struggling to cope in this economy, but Paradores seem full & over staffed as usual in management areas, which would lead you to believe that a few hundred Euros on some decent plants and decor would not be out of the budget!

If you go to Ubeda, stay here the location is glorious, but expect normal Paradores service and food.

Room Tip: Try to get room overlooking the private walled garden

This was our first Parador and what an amazing experience it was. Set in an old Palace, right in the heart of the town - magnificent streets to explore and plenty of choice for eating/drinking. The staff weren't as helpful as others we visited but were 'ok'! Highly recommend the Parador experience - indulge yourself! We paid Euro 141 - this included breakfast for 2 - they do a special Golden Years price!! Plenty of room in the bedrooms and our bathroom had double sinks. Lovely shower - internet - the works!

This parador has been refurbished beautifully and reflects the old style very well whilst offering modern day comforts. The location is perfect for exploring the old town of Ubeda and the views from the walls a few hundred yards away are spectacular. The tasting menu in the restaurant offers great value for money and the food is beautifully presented and delicious. Don't be tempted to have a few tapas with your pre-dinner drinks elsewhere as there are 5 cold starters and 5 hot ones followed by the entree and desert! The restaurant decor is rather plain but don't let this put you off - the food and service are extremely good.
