“Relaxing & Pleasant experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2011

June 2011 4 night stay with wife.

Overall: I highly recommend this hotel, clean, modern, very comfortable and quiet! An excellent retreat for a holiday and or weekend break. Hotel is "tailored" for young to mature couples without children.
(This doesn´t mean that children are not permitted though because they are)
Hotel Service is personalised & professional.
Breakfast is deliciously fresh and tasty; varied and more than generous for most palates.
Hotel is a 10 minute stroll down the residencial street to the seaside village of Agua Amarga.
Pool is lovely and spacious.
Free car parking

Room Tip: Ask for deluxe double room overlooking the sea

Situated on the edge of a small village in the Natural Park - only downside is the steep walk back up from the village/beach - (I was 5 months pg when we stayed, and have to admit I puffed a little bit!). Well appointed comfy rooms, with balconies over looking the sea and huge bathrooms with jacuzzi baths. Highlight has to be the breakfast, which was the best we had in our week long tour of Andalusia. Freshly squeezed orange juice, a platter of fruit brought to your table, freshly prepared hot dishes and a round of delicious pastries.

Every year we spend a weekend at a hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The rule is that it has to be somewhere that we could not generally afford to stay for a week, so we get a little bit of luxury for our special day. This was certainly true at Hotel El Tio Kiko! The room was fab, huge modern 4 poster bed and an eclectic mix of modern and antique style furnishings in cool natural colours and wood. Our room had a terrace with views of the Med across the little white village of Aguamarga and also the pool below. On arrival there was a half bottle of my favourite cava chilling in a bucket, together with a bowl of fresh sweet cherries. The bathroom was gorgeous, again natural colours twin marble basins, huge jacuzzi bath with shower, towelling robes, slippers and plenty of clean white fluffy towels. The aircon had been turned on prior to our arrival which was a welcome touch in the July heat. The room was cleaned to a high standard and this was maintained throughout our stay. Each night chocolate arrived ! One night 2 tiny Toblerones, another night 2 mini Kitkats! All lovely little touches! The hotel's public rooms were also styled beautifully see photos. Something I have never commented on before in a review was the standard of maintenance. At El Tio Kiko it was second to none ! One night a Moorish style plaster covered wall light by the pool had been broken , probably as someone went past with a suitcase as it was low down. The following morning the broken terracotta, bits of plaster etc had been swept away and the plaster cover had been rebuilt! The only disappointment was that they do not do meals other than breakfast, which from other reviews I think they used to do, as I imagine they would have matched the same high standard as the rest of the hotel. Breakfast was a delight, fruit (several types of melon, 2 types of kiwi fruit, nectarines, peaches, cherries, mango etc )all beautifully sliced and presented buffet style, yogurt drinks, jamon, salami, cheeses, tortilla and 2 hot dishes each morning eg revuelto, a Spanish scrambled egg type dish with tiny prawns or jamon, mushrooms, asparagus or green beans in it, or little terracotta dishes with tomato sauce in with a poached egg on top sprinkled with tiny dice of jamon. Fabulous fresh bread white and a brown nut bread and for those who like to have something sweet for breakfast an array of tiny cakes, (one bite and they are gone !) muffins, both chocolate and fruit and one morning a carrot and cinnamon cake, cut into tiny squares! Added to this was excellent, friendly but professional service, serving our fresh orange juice, coffee/tea and toast at the table. A banquet to start the day!
Aguamarga is a tiny Spanish village with few shops, those that there are all seem to sell the same thing, Indian cotton dresses, sandals, flipflops, jewellery, t shirts, some tourist stuff. The beach is lovely and clean and the village is surrounded by countryside with signposted walks for the energetic. There are a few bars, a pizza place where you queue up like in a chipshop and eat at tables in the narrow street and a couple of beach restaurants. We luckily stayed the weekend of Aguamarga's fiesta and were treated to an excellent flamenco show by the village girls of all ages, music in the plaza until the early hours finishing of with typical Spanish fireworks, mucho noise and not much else !
We didn't touch the car from the time we arrived until we left 3 days later, just chilled out, spent time around the pool, walked around the village and along the beach, ate and drank and stayed in a wonderful hotel ! You can't get better than that !

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of September. Everything about this place is amazing - it has a sign saying its a 3-star property, but it should by far and away be 5-star! Our room was spacious and luxurious - king sized bed with high quality linens, comfy loungechairs and classy furniture - and a large, luxury marble bathroom with spa and fluffy bathrobes. you could see the blue waters of the Mediterranean from the bed - or even better, from the modern outdoor setting on the balcony. The rest of the hotel is inkeeping with the room - the pool is large, sparkling clean and beautiful; breakfast amazing and communal areas of the hotel all luxurious and tranquil.
Agua Amarga itself is made for relaxing - we spent our days lazing by the pool between going to have a meal or drink at the beachside restaurants. We spent a morning at the beach however ended up retreating to the hotel pool as the beach wasn't the best for swimming - large rocks and stones on the seabed which are almost impossible to walk on - I saw some people with reef shoes on! Otherwise, Agua Amarga can't be faulted. If you want to escape everything and have a few days of guarenteed relaxation in a beautiful hotel and location, stay here.

  • Liked — View, pool, room, everything!
  • Disliked — The crane obscuring our view - otherwise, nothing!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2008

Our one week stay was a really nice experience. Both the hotel, town, beach and surroundings are beautiful and worth a visit.

Positive points
- Sea/town view
- Beautiful room and bathroom, both clean and up to date
- Huge spa bath tub
- Breakfast is served until 11:30 and is delicious.
- Free Wi-Fi internet connection
- Beach is a 5 minute walk, so is the first restaurant
- Small but nice pool
- Easy parking, enough space
- Quiet
- Friendly staff

Minor inconveniences
- Bath/shower difficult to get in if you are not that athletic (anymore).
- No do not disturb sign. This can lead to rather awkward moments.
- The bed has a plastic sheet which does not add to comfort.
- Few moments that we had the pool to ourselves, it is rather small
- Booking must be done by phone, as all bookings are written down in a book rather than in a computer. The staff speaks English, so it should not be a problem.

The town itself is quite small but offered all we needed, there are about four or five restaurants in total (three located on the beach). Also there are about two take out places and there is a mini supermarket. We observed that food is served during siesta (roughly 1pm - 4 pm) and in the evening (roughly 9pm-11pm). We made it a habit of eating the main meal during the siesta and eating something light at night.
The beach was picturesque and not crowded. Because of the heat we usually went in the late afternoon so we could enjoy the shadow of the right side hill. Also we bought a 14 euro parasol in the mini market. After 7pm the beach scene changes and a lot of sport activities are undertaken, a whole new crowd arrives.

As the town is located in a nature park the surroundings are nice to see and you can do horseback riding and hiking (one hiking trail is located next to the hotel).
There is a big town located just 15 minutes away. Another beach can be found 5 minutes away (by car).

The hotel as such is very nice, apart from some minor inconvienences: tv very small (33 cm) and "turbulance", no fridge in the room, many steps to walk. All around the hotel there is cuurently building activity, but not very disturbing. Agua Amarga itself is 50 years back in the time machine, but with 2050 prices: only two restaurants at the beach that clearly made an agreement on prices for food and drinks: very high for substandard food. As is the price for a room: € 150,00 per night.

The beach is rather dirty, no stretchers for rent etc. I recommand this hotel, but only for the ones that like a very very quite and peacefull holiday far away from it all. The surroundings around Agua Amarga are very beautifull, take a hike!

All in all 3 stars well diserved.
