Excellent value tapas, not a great choice but mostly cooked fresh for you. 3 free tapas and 3 wines less than 5.50 Euros.

“Creative Tapas & Free!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

I love the new range of Tapas available at El Barrio Libre which are complimentary with your drink.

Pelota, Prawns, Mini Burgers, Tuna, Goats Cheese and more. The old favourites are all still available though including Chorizo, Morcilla, Sausage, Lomo, Chicken Soy kebabs etc....

Being creative, Fernando changes the tapas regularly, so you could eat something different every time you visit Barrio Libre.

What is great is that all the Tapas is freshly cooked to order, which makes a big difference from some Tapas Bars, where the food has been sitting there a few hours and is just heated up in a microwave.

I'd also recommend the Manchego Cheese, great with a glass of wine.

“The best of Mojacar Playa, whatever the occasion.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

A cut above anything I have seen, or tasted, on Mojacar Playa.

A very friendly welcome.

Complementary tapas cooked to order (mainly pinchos), with a good few vegetarian options too.

For lunch I had a tuna main course. I expected the usual meat/fish with chips (having never eaten here before), but was presented with a beautifully looking and tasting dish with fresh grilled veg all cooked perfectly.
Desert was a delicious homemade chocolate brownie, again beautifully presented.

Perfect for everything from a few drinks to a full blown meal and an absolute bargain at the prices.

Can't wait for my next visit to try more of the menu!

“An Oasis on Mojacar Playa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

El Barrio Libre has fast become one of my favourite bar/restaurants on Mojacar Playa. You always receive fantastic, friendly service from Fernando the owner. There's an excellent range of quality wines including the outstanding Tetas de la Cristina - a smooth organic Tinto which really is one of the best red wines I have ever tasted and it is made in Almeria. Highly recommended!

All the Tapas is homemade and meats are freshly cooked to order and there are loads to choose from - I highly recommend the Swordfish, Soy Chicken Kebab, Gambas & Lomo - all though they are all really good. You receive a free tapa with a beer/wine, which makes it very good value for money.

There's a great choice of mains including fish, meats, seafood, pasta, salads and rices, which ensures there is something for everyone including children. All the food is homemade with fresh quality ingredients and Mercedes has to be one of the most talented chefs in Mojacar. The food not only looks fantastic and tastes amazing but some of the dishes are highly creative and would not look out of place on a high class restaurant but without the high prices making El Barrio Libre fantastic value for money. Make sure you try the delicious freshly baked Chocolate Brownie Desert. It is served warm with ice cream, beautifully presented and truly is chocolate heaven!

Fernando speaks great English and is always happy to go above and beyond for his customers. Providing Sport in English and Spanish when requested.

The ambience is relaxing and inviting, great for just coffee, a drink, lunch, a romantic evening or a family party (so anytime is great to spend some quality time there!) and it is always spotlessly clean.

Fernando & Mercedes deserve to do really well and I am sure El Barrio Libre will be a great success!

“High quality, creative and very reasonable...the restaurateur's restaurant!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

I have known this restaurant from years back through two previous owners and I'm thrilled to see that it has been taken on by a very amiable and enthusiastic restaurateur, in Fernando. Not only is he knowledgeable, he knows how to manage his customers. He also speaks better English than many British nationals! The smart move here is that Fernando has also turned the establishment into a regular bar as well as retained a restaurant.

The restaurant is deceptive, in that it offers a higher class of cuisine and creativity than you'd expect when you first walk through the door...the chef Mercedes (not his wife Denleigh) is one of the most creative chefs in the area. With years of experience it really shows through, and outstrips many other restaurants.

As for the food and wine: The menu turns-over regularly so you will always have something interesting to savour...like this tapa (photo included). It's creative, tasty and such a change from the boring Russian Salad and anchovies in oil...which seems so common elsewhere. The main courses are also just as interesting and the Duck Risotto, Pork Cheeks with Apple compote and mashed potato, or the veal in Port Sauce are all excellent, and as good if not better than you'd find in many more expensive restaurant. It's not all 'highly creative' as you can also get the usual paellas and rice dishes but all the food is prepared with passion and pride.

The restaurant has some really good wines and I recommend the 'Tetas de la Sacristana' (Red)....a local wine which will not give you a hang-over (I know from first hand experience).
Price of food is very reasonable and you can enjoy a great quality meal with excellent service, for about 32 € to 35 € for two...

Finally, I must point out that I happen to know that many of the local restaurant owners in the area often frequent this restaurant...that is a clear recommendation in itself!
