My wife and I have just returned from our second visit to the Solverde Hotel, this time we stayed between 10st and 17th September. I left a review following our visit in 2008 and I must now correct some misleading information which I posted then. I suggested guests could save some money by booking a room with a land view as I genuinely believed all the bedrooms enjoyed a sea view. This year I took my own advice and booked a land view – and ended up with a land view ! There are, indeed, about 40 bedrooms which face away from the sea; they are identical in every other respect to all the more expensive ones. Like last year, we cannot praise the staff enough for their friendliness and willingness to help, even during the “rush hour” at breakfast time. The buffet breakfasts were still of high quality and available until 10.30.
Like the previous year, we again had the company of the FC Porto team who always stay the night prior to any of their home games. We actually managed to chat to a couple of famous players as we waited for a lift to appear, despite their manager not approving of them talking to other guests.
The hotel is still in a very quiet location and somewhat isolated so packing a pair of walking shoes might be worthwhile. We ate out most nights; the hotel’s 5 course evening dinner was priced at 24 euros per person. We found a great little bar and restaurant a 10 minute stroll away, on the road to Granja. It’s called the R &B and is run by a very friendly couple - Vasco and his wife Dinis – their cooking is great value for money. Watch out for their parrot who barks at the dog and when the dog barks back, it says “Shut Up!”
As before, we often strolled along the boardwalk (15 kms long) and also spent most mornings on the clean sandy beach which can easily be accessed via the hotel pool area; guests need to bring their own beach towel to use on the beach.
We were surprised to discover that Espinho, the nearest town of any size, has now got several very upmarket shops, gentlemen beware !
