“Our second stay !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2009

My wife and I have just returned from our second visit to the Solverde Hotel, this time we stayed between 10st and 17th September. I left a review following our visit in 2008 and I must now correct some misleading information which I posted then. I suggested guests could save some money by booking a room with a land view as I genuinely believed all the bedrooms enjoyed a sea view. This year I took my own advice and booked a land view – and ended up with a land view ! There are, indeed, about 40 bedrooms which face away from the sea; they are identical in every other respect to all the more expensive ones. Like last year, we cannot praise the staff enough for their friendliness and willingness to help, even during the “rush hour” at breakfast time. The buffet breakfasts were still of high quality and available until 10.30.

Like the previous year, we again had the company of the FC Porto team who always stay the night prior to any of their home games. We actually managed to chat to a couple of famous players as we waited for a lift to appear, despite their manager not approving of them talking to other guests.

The hotel is still in a very quiet location and somewhat isolated so packing a pair of walking shoes might be worthwhile. We ate out most nights; the hotel’s 5 course evening dinner was priced at 24 euros per person. We found a great little bar and restaurant a 10 minute stroll away, on the road to Granja. It’s called the R &B and is run by a very friendly couple - Vasco and his wife Dinis – their cooking is great value for money. Watch out for their parrot who barks at the dog and when the dog barks back, it says “Shut Up!”

As before, we often strolled along the boardwalk (15 kms long) and also spent most mornings on the clean sandy beach which can easily be accessed via the hotel pool area; guests need to bring their own beach towel to use on the beach.

We were surprised to discover that Espinho, the nearest town of any size, has now got several very upmarket shops, gentlemen beware !

A very good hotel in almost all aspects. Friendly staff, great rooms, great surrondings, fantastic health club and spa, very clean and with a great seafood buffet on Saturdays.
Just one note for the breakfast with a certain lack of diversity of hot dishes, but that was a very minor problem.
The location is also fantastic, with the beach just there.
I loved my stay.

This hotel is really first rate. The reception staff are wonderfully helpful. The bedroom was spacious and the towels and bedding changed daily. Breakfast was buffet style with everything on hand. The sauna (sperate ladies and gents) was quite special with all sorts of different facities. The outdoor and indoor swimming pools were wonderful and the changing facilities second to none.

I did not venture to their Casino situated in town but was recommended their Aquarium Restaurant beside the Casino. Lovely meal. - but very expensive.

The 15 kilometer broadwalk is wonderful. The train station is close by and the trains are modern and inexpensive. The trains pass the hotel but the noise is minimal.

The hotel offers a free shutle bus to places if booked the day before.

This hotel does really merit a standing ovation

Both my wife and I enjoyed our weeks stay in this hotel from the time we checked in until we left we found all the staff very pleasent and helpfull. We had the breakfast every morning which was excellent, we did not eat in the restaurant in the evening but we heard other people who did say they enjoved their meal and the prices seemed reasonable. We had a room with a sea view which was nicely furnished and had a mini bar with a bottle of beer at 2 euro and spirits at 3 euro good value We did not use the Wellness Centre The taxi from the Airport cost 30 euro and took about 30 mins. There is a train station in Esphino with a regular service to Porto which we used most days so we had the best of both worlds a seaside hotel and easy access to the city and all it had to offer The nearby town of Esphino is not your typical tourist area but it has some nice shopping streets and a Casino and a nice beach front . There are a limited range of restaurants there ,we mostly had our evening meal in Porto and came back on the train After I checked I discovered that I lost my phone in the hotel I contacted them and they located it and are fowarding it to me All in all we had a pleasent and enjoyable week thank you Hotel Solverde

stayed for one week. very good facilities (spa, gym, pools etc), friendly & helpful staff & good food. excellent value overall. only minor criticism would be relative isolation.

Excellent hotel in all respects for a short break. We found a shortage of good restuarants to try in the surrounding area though.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2007

We stayed at the hotel solverde for four nights at the end of September.
We arranged a transfer with the hotel for 35 euros, cheaper than if you just arrive I think.
Journey times was about 20 mines, we arrived at the hotel and as it appeared quiet we checked in straightaway.
The room was very clean, lovely big bed, fridge, air con, and TV.
The only negative was no tea and coffee making facilities in your room, but that wasn’t a major issue.
Pool area was nice, grass all around the pool, water was quite cold, but there is an indoor pool if you wanted a swim.
The gym was very good for a hotel, lots of machines, but didn’t get to use any, (maybe next time).
Breakfast was adequate not up to 5 star standards but perfectly acceptable.
Location is just outside espinho as you walk onto the beach turn left and it’s a good 40 min walk, but the walk is lovely and a taxi back is only 5 euros.
Other post have said to walk right, we walked right to the end of the beach, and didn’t find anything of interest that side.
In espinho is a small beach community, at the time of year restaurants were starting to close and it had that end of season feel to it.
We found a lovely little restaurant called barco-boador and the food was very reasonable, the rest of the time we ate in Porto.
Porto is extremely easy to get to just get a taxi into esphino and then the train 2.5 euros takes 30 mins.
Last train back is after midnight (or was in September) but we got a taxi for only 35 euros.
Overall a nice quite break by the sea, somewhere to unwind and just enjoy.
The hotel is not 5 stars, but a good 4 star. Reasons why, hotel service not very efficient, (transfers always ran late) breakfast could have been better, (choice of coffee and freshly cooked food by a chef) and towels around the pool were worn and needs larger towels provided.
All this makes me sound ultra fussy, im not, but feel 5 star is now given to readily to hotels.
Would I stay hear again absolutely!!
