“Basic but nice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2012

Hard to find by car, but quite nice and only a 5-7 euro cab ride from points of interest. Rooms nice and staff helpful. Good value

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2012

We stayed here for 2 nights. The hotel was clean and tidy and staff very helpful. The food is not bad and relatively fresh. The pool is clean and terrace kept clean and tidy.

We had a smoking room (neither of us smoke) and although the corridor smelt strongly of cigarettes the room was fine.

The bed was very hard and pillows not great but it was clean and functional.

Free wifi helped although it was a little intermittant but we had a wifi tmn dongle with us as back up.

10 min walk under the motorway to get to the big shopping mall is quite useful if you need any shopping or top floor is the food hall.

Room Tip: Ensure you book non smoking overlooking the pool if possible.

The Novotel shares a site with a cheaper Ibis and includes free car parking. A taxi to the centre of Porto costs between 7 and 10 Euros; if you wish to use public transport, you need to catch either a 902 or 903 bus from the traffic island 300 metres from the hotel. This will take you to Casa da Musica, from where you can take the Metro into the centre. Expect a total journey time of 30 minutes via public transport, or 10-15 mins via taxi.

Car parking in Porto is around 0.40 Euro per 15 minutes for the first hour, then 0.30 Euro for 15 minutes afterwards. So reckon on 10 Euros for an 8 hour stay. There are plenty of parking options in Porto and a double storey in Vila Nova de Gaia near the Port wine cellars, but driving can be a bit tricky with a fair amount of traffic at rush hour, narrow (often cobbled) streets and some one-way confusion.

There is a Continente supermarket 15 minutes walk away from the hotel down the hill. It's vast and sells pretty much everything practical you're likely to need - but easier to get to with a car if you want to carry bags. It's an uphill walk back!

We stayed for a week and very much enjoyed the hotel - the staff were friendly, the public areas very clean, the swimming pool small but neat and tidy, and the free wifi access good in both rooms and public areas. I was impressed that there was a free access internet point with a printer near the dining room.

We had breakfast included in our room price - it was a very good buffet, with a wide variety of fruit, cold meats, cereals, cheese etc. as well as hot items - boiled and scrambled eggs, mushrooms, tomato (with cheese melted on top), sausages and bacon. Plenty of fruit juice.

We also had two evening meals - mains cost around 10-15 Euros, and there's a two course offer for around 13 Euros. The quality was good.

The staff were also happy to recommend a very nice fish restaurant down the hill on the banks of the Douro.

The drawbacks? Location - this isn't in the centre of Porto and you'll need either your own transport or public transport. You might consider buying an Andante pass which covers public transport - including the Guindais Funicular - if you're making multiple trips. There's also the Porto Card available from Tourist Information offices which offers discounted or free tickets to museums and attractions in Porto, as well as inclusive access to public transport. A 24 hour card costs 10.50 Euro, 48 hours is 17.50 Euro and 72 hours 21.50 Euro. This does NOT include trams, even though the tram leaflets say it does - they no longer accept the Porto card.

The other drawback - mentioned in other reviews - is the beds. They are not quite as bad as some suggest, but they are hard.

Would we stay here again? Definitely. But be aware of the location and the practicalities before you decide if it's right for you.

Room Tip: Rooms either face the swimming pool or car park (at left end), or distant view of ocean/entrance are...

The worst mattress ever! We are very savvy travelers. Had I known that the beds have such a bad mattress that you can feel the springs and you feel every move of yours and your partner in this small bed ( no beds bigger than two in this hotel) I would have NEVER selected it. Too bad I booked with hotel. com and can't cancell the rest of the stay. This is NOT a 4 star quality
