“nice tour - if you can't go a bit further uphill!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

pretty much all the tours are the same, but this one has a very good guide who is knowledgeable and friendly. The waiting room is pleasant and the variety of ports offered is nice (though I preferred the offers from Taylors just a bit further uphill).

“Good experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

We took a Duoro river ride and got a free pass to the Croft Distillery. We initially thought of walking to the distillery but the roads were too steep and the day was way too hot to walk. So we took the Funicular instead. The usual travel pass is not valid for this particular funicular and you need to buy tickets to take this.

The Croft Distillery is very well maintained. They have tours every 30 min or so. Sadly when we went we had the tour in Portugese. We could not understand a word. Luckily there were a few people from the UK and Ireland and our guide was kind enough to explain things in English as well.

The whole tour lasts only 15-20 mins and you can see only the casks here as the wine is actually brewed elsewhere. At the end you get a free tasting of fine Port. The whole tour was good and the team was helpful too. Good place to visit

“Great experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

My husband and I went to the Croft Port Wine Lodge and had a great time. We were given white port wine to taste while waiting on our tour, which was delicious. We took a 20 minute tour of the cellars in English, which was very cool. After the tour, we were given a red port wine to taste. Croft is located up the hill away from the crowded street. Very cool, isolated area to look around. We enjoyed our time there.

“Free tastings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

One of the few port houses that offers free tastings as long as you take the tour. It is a bit of a hike up from the Douro River in Gaia but worth it. They have many other ports that you can try for a minimal price. Very friendly and guides speak very good English.

“Worthwhile visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

Wine tasting was included in the price of the boat trip along the Douro river. We purchased the ticket from the information centre near Sao Bento station on the walk down to the port. The tickets do not expire and you can visit at any time before 6pm Mon to Fri or before 3pm on Sun.

We were able to sample a 3 and 5 year old Port and were given a tour of the wine lodge. Lots of opportunity for taking photos. Tasting of other wines on the menu including the 10 year tawny was possible at a small extra cost. Each visitor is allowed 25% discount on the wines bought at the lodge.
