“Lovely but overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

We stayed in The Yeatman on the first night of our honeymoon in August. We let them know the reason for our trip in advance and booked to have their tasting menu on the terrace of our room. However, the day before we arrived they called us to say the weather was terrible and they could no longer accommodate that. Disappointing, but obviously not their fault - although the weather when we arrived was perfect!
The hotel's location is the main draw - the views are absolutely stunning, and they make the most of that - you overlook the river and Porto from all the bedrooms, the pool, and the bar and restaurant. The rooms were spacious and clean, although for the price we expected a bit more water than one small bottle between two, and if I'm being really picky, the location of the taps in the bath made it very difficult to get comfortable! The books scattered around the room about wine were a nice touch.
The tasting menu we eventually ate in the restaurant was good, not great - but with all the extras between courses that they brought we were absolutely stuffed.
You had to pay extra for breakfast (around 17 euros each I think) and a further 10 euro each if you wanted an egg, which seemed a bit stingy given the price of the room. When we discovered this and were offered drinks by the pool later, we declined on the basis it would be extortionately expensive.
We only stayed one night as a special treat at the beginning of our honeymoon, and for the room, breakfast and dinner ended up paying well over 600 euros. We enjoyed the hotel and especially the views, but it wasn't worth that price. We also expected, if not a free drink/upgrade for our honeymoon, at least someone to say congratulations to us! But despite the fact my husband had made sure they knew why we were there, it was never acknowledged which we thought was a shame.

The Hotel infrastructure is terrific, great rooms, great hallways, very well maintained. To turn this hotel into a real 5* venue significant improvement is necessary in the f&b department, especially in food. Serving meals - and be it only coffee in the morning - takes way too long and eggs come without pepper and salt which take another 10 minutes to be served. Untrained staff in restaurant add to bad service experience.

I think this hotel is over rated by people's compare to some other hotels in Asia or Middle Est.
This is a very good hotel in a perfect position, probably the best in Porto, rooms are really spacious and bed very comfortable, breakfast is good even for a continental which include meat, cheeses, beans, sausages etc... Except eggs.
Summer package is a very good value including 20% off the Spa treatments.
Spa is looking quite cold when you arrive but the girls are very good for Caudalie treatments.
Restaurant is not bad and probably excellent for Portugal but compare to a French Gastronomic this is not as good, menu is 100 to 150€ per person.
You also can eat at the bar a snack.
Staffs are very nice but a bit slow for service like any Latin country.
I did have a little problem when checked in and I think a Manager should be around the place more often. This was sort out when I checked out.
Generally this is a good hotel for west Europe but I wouldn't stay more than 3 nights in Porto especially in winter, no much to do.

Room Tip: All rooms are facing Porto city.

Sometimes you wonder if you were looking through rose coloured glasses when returning to a hotel/location you've been to before. We did wonder, but when we arrived; saw the room and the view, ate at the restaurant, swam in the pool and went to the spa we concluded we were not wearing rose coloured glasses and the whole experience was as fantastic as our first visit just after the hotel opened.

The rooms are lovely, all with wonderful views of the World Heritage Listed old town. The Michelin starred restaurant is not pretentious or expensive - the food was excellent value for money as was the wine.

As for the Spa... Well, it is a great place to relax and unwind - a couples massage and a couples scrub are highly recommended. Lovely staff and very good massages!

The bar is lovely for a quality light evening meal and the wine by the glass list is extensive and excellent value!

Just go and experience a wonderful break! (We booked the excellent value Summer package, but even full price is not too bad for a hotel of this quality)

Room Tip: Make sure if you want a shower and you are planning on staying in the cheapest rooms, to ask for one...

The Yeatman hotel is sited where the old Taylors warehouses were, and owned by the same company. This makes it perfectly located for visits to the cellars for tastings. Architecturally stunning, this hotel got a lot of things right. Amazing views from every room (including both pools), towels ready and waiting on deck chairs, large rooms with a terrace each, a great wine list available everywhere with a good range of prices, and despite being full the night we arrived it didn’t feel crowded. The rooms are full of books and magazines about wine and Portugal, which were great for planning some of our outings.

It does have a few “snagging” issues that could be sorted. Annoyingly loud jazz over breakfast that we had to ask to be turned down twice (but this was done immediately), and terrible service in the bar. 20 minutes after ordering a drink we chased it up to be told “I didn’t realise you’d ordered one.”, so I don’t know what it was he thought he said “no problem” to. But these are minor things and we definitely recommend it.

This hotel excels on all fronts. this is a new, very well planned and designed hotel. It is spacious and never seemed overcrowded even though we were told it was full.
All the bedrooms, public rooms, pools and terraces look out over the city of Porto, and the views are spectacular. Each floor has a different theme and maps all linked to the history of Porto and port production with the lowest floor housing the wine cellar . The spa is excellent with wide range of treatments and facilities. We booked a deal direct with the hotel with discounted treatments.
The bedrooms are spacious and well thought out e.g the safe has a power point for iPad and phone charging; books and magazines in English were provided. We had a ground floor room with a terrace, bath and separate shower. Service was excellent with well informed tourist information at reception. We didn't eat in the restaurant but the bar food and breakfast were very good with opportunities to try a range of port- try the house cocktails you won't be disappointed.
The location is across the river Douro from Porto, up a steep cobbled street (forget high heels) set amongst the old port warehouses. Note, there is a side entrance to the hotel part way up the hill, you enter by pressing the intercom on the gate to speak to reception then using your swipe card to gain access to the hotel proper - a godsend after a day,s sightseeing. Taxis and tuk tuks
are available at the bottom of the hill or bookable from the hotel if you don't want to walk.
It was worth booking a walking guided tour of Porto to see the main sights and find our way
around. Other worthwhile excursions were a trip to the coast on the vintage tram €2.50 each way and a day trip up the Douro. We're planning to visit again and will certainly stay at The Yeatman again, as a previous reviewer commented, we didn't see a hotel with comparable facilities during our stay.

Room Tip: All rooms have great views with balcony or terrace, some have sun beds whilst others have table and...

I start this with a caveat insofar as we booked with the absolutely stellar value Summer Package which gave us a great rate, breakfast, free parking (we drove up from Lisbon) and discounts at the spa, and I'm not sure we would have plumped for the full high season rate. That said, this hotel is in the most spectacular location, with stunning views of Porto, the river and bridge and the vibe in Vila Nova de Gaia is much better than Porto itself, which feels depressingly bankrupt. The staff is amazingly well-trained and greet you at every opportunity, the concierge (Yennifer) was outstanding in arranging a perfect day in the Duoro Valley of wine/port tasting in a number of quintas with lunch on the river at the absolutely spectacular DOC restaurant. Our room was great, with a fantastic river-view terrace (part of the Summer package) and the most excellent bathroom with shutters which allowed a view across to Porto while in the tub. Finally, although we didn't use the spa, the infinity pool and gym where also both fantastic. We didn't eat at the Michelin restaurant but had lunch at the bar with some excellent accompanying wines, one of which i brought home from the gift/wine shop. I've run out of superlatives, so will simply say that The Yeatman was a near-perfect experience and the Summer package made it excellent value as well. If I had to reach for a downside, it would be that the hotel doesn't have an alternative to its Michelin restaurant for dinner as the bar menu is mostly pizza and sandwiches which is a bit of a drag if you've had a quintessential huge Portuguese lunch and aren't up for a big flighted dinner. Overall, a fantastic experience.

Room Tip: Plump up for a river terrace room on the 3rd floor, it's worth it.
