“All inclusive - no way, more like half board!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

My husband and I and our two friends have just returned from a 2 week all inclusive stay at this hotel, our rooms was adequate, clean, with a lovely view over the bay. We had no air conditioning, but we left the patio door open at night which was fine. The staff were friendly and eager to please. We are not fussy eaters but unfortunately we found the food quite boring, tasteless and lacking variety, there was only one meat and one fish dish available and if you did'nt like the look of that there was only salad, pasta and processed cheese. The sweet was always gataux, icecream or some fresh fruit which was fine for the first couple of days. Breakfast was ok but the fried eggs were cooked in advance and by the time anyone ate them they were like rubber and dried out. NO food was cooked fresh in front of you. Nothing looked appetizing, There were not enough waiters to clear the tables, therefore plates would pile up around you. There were no all day snacks( like other all inclusive) should you feel peckish, only a small tray of sandwiches and soggy cake which was brought out at 11am and 5pm, but you had to be quick, as it was like a stampede with everyone grabbing them, and on one rare occasion they removed some which had not been eaten, half an hour later! Icecream was ONLY available between 4 and 5pm which was very dissapointing for children. Getting a drink was a nightmare as even though we had wrist bands on we still had to sign for it, resulting in long queues, (once waiting 40 mins to be served) with many people getting double the amount to save them queueing again! There were no diet drinks! Evening entertainment was pretty poor, and not much going on outside the hotel either, only a few cafe's. We are in our 60's and were not expecting to disco everynight, but we were bored stiff. The trips out were our only saviour, we enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Madeira, We were informed of this holiday via a travel company over the phone, our biggest mistake was not checking the write up on the hotel and area first, prior to booking. This hotel in our opinion is not a four star, more a three and not suited for children unless they are babies and fine for anyone wanting to spend just a weekend away. My advice would be to stay in Funchel where there is more to see and do and check out the hotel FIRST!!!

It's just a 3 star hotel, with pretty basic facilities, but you get what you pay for and it enables you to explore this pleasant town near the airport.
The rooms are tired. No a/c, which means leaving windows open to the noise from either the town or the sea outside. If you want an iron, you have to pay for the ironing service and you can only borrow a hair drier from reception. There are basic toiletries in the bathroom, but ours didn't get refilled during the week until we asked. If you want to use the room safe, there's a 2 euro a day charge! The food is very basic and the evening entertainment torturous, feeling like a bad 70's club, synthesised music with an out of tune and too loud wailer!. That said, we found the staff friendly and the in-house activity centres excellent, especially the diving centre who were very flexible and helpful.

Just returned from a week stay in the Dom Pedro Baia. After booking the all inclusive I was a little worried reading some of the reviews about the food but I suppose people's tastes varies.
First the hotel - I agree with others on here that it is a little dated and the room (817) was a little small but the bathroom was a good size and I really only use the hotel room to store clothes and sleep.
The pool is "sea water" but to be honest I didnt notice any difference this made and was busy most of the time, however the beach is 50m away and has both a stoney part and a "bought in" yellow sandy section.
There is a small "games" room but this only had one pool table, a football table and a table tennis table, hardly adequate for a hotel of this size.
Eating - I did not encounter any of the "stacked plates" or other problems with the staff. If there was not a cleared table we merely asked one of the waiters and a table was cleared and laid for us. The food was plentiful and varied. There was always a good choice and no meal was repeated during the week we were there. Even when we turned up late one evening the soup was still piping hot, the salad fresh and nothing had run out even the 4 different sweets that were always available - the maderians clearly have a sweet tooth. We never went hungry and often skipped the morning/afternoon snacks in the pool bar.
Someone on TA described this as "basic" - well all I can say is that they must live an "a la carte" existence. If you are expecting Steak/chips - Curries and Pizzas - i.e "English - cuisine" - then I suggest that an all inclusive at a European hotel like this is not for you.
The all inclusive drinks were from 10am- 11.30pm and were quite expensive if you didnt take the all inclusive. The pool bar only gave single measures and the beer in small plastic beakers which did mean lots of return trips, but the evening drinks were "double" measures and the beer came in pint glasses.

The town is close by and we were lucky in the annual food festival was taking place in the square which meant that the town was buzzing but I suspect it can be rather quiet for some people.

TIP - If you want to go to Funchal don't get the cab from hotel €30, get the bus €3.30. If there are 4 of you waiting at the bus stop a cab will pull up and offer to take all 4 of you for the same price as the bus €13.20. We did this twice traveling into Funchal with two locals and two Germans :-)

Would definitely recommend this hotel and its all inclusive - although I would say that those looking for lots of nightlife might be disappointed.

Hotel was comfortable 4 star no 3 star yes , staff very pleasant , bedroom was basic but that was fine as we did not spend all day in it only to sleep, food plenty but some not to our taste but when in another country you expect that , we did not go hungry ,the wine was well I have tasted better at other hotels , we went all inclusive so if we did not like what they were having for dinner we could always have lunch so no problem overall we had a lovely relaxing holiday Madeira its self was beautiful and stunning .The hotel is situated in a unspoilt little bay ideal holiday for the over 50s would like to go back in the near future

A big concrete hotel. Very well maintained but mediocre in every other respect. We did not do all inclusive and were very pleased as the food was basic. The other guests were mostly elderly and on cheap packages. We will be happy to move to a better hotel tomorrow.

I can really say many things about this hotel because there wasnt anything good or bad about it. It just had no atmosphere, and the staff just did their job! They didnt care if you enjoyed yourself or not!
When we arrived it was early evening, the receptionist checked us in, but when I asked where the restaurant was, and what time dinner finished, she just said 'all the information you need is in your room', Not really what we expected from a 4* hotel. There was no porter in the hotel at all, so we had to take our own bags to the 9th floor. Again no great hardship, but unexpected.
The food was OK, not a lot of choice, but one fish, one meat and one veggie and it was of a good standard. The waiters seldom cleared plates, so by the end of the meal there was always a mound of dishes teetering on the edge of the table. There just seemed to be a lack of staff.

Room Tip: Rooms on the higher floors seemed quieter with better views, but beware of the lift breaking down!

Just back from a week at this hotel - do not believe the bad reviews - although not a large choice of food you would not go hungry - the hotel was lovely - our room was spacious and the views beautiful - the room was cleaned daily with fresh towels every other day - even pillow cases changed - the hotel staff were more than friendly - it is a lovely unspoilt little resort in a lovely bay - the pool area, bar and gardens beautiful - would not recommend for children as average age about 50 - but the place to go if you just want relax and do nothing - will definitely be going back in a few years
