“Glorious walk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

Loved the views; lots of steps though so you need to be reasonable fit. My favourite day of the trip

“Excellent Caldeira private car tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2013

Having been to Madeira several times and visited Funchal and the Valley of the Nuns, we wanted to see the South East of the Island, culminating in Ponta de Sao Lourenco. Through the internet we discovered that there were no group tours on the day we were there (a Friday), so we booked a private 4 hour car tour with Esmeraldo Caldeira for 70 euros.

Esmeraldo was waiting for us on the cruise ship dock. I had forgotten to ask if he was a smoker (third hand smoke is very bad in a taxi), but he was there waiting for us with no cigarette in hand.

He gave us a wonderful tour of the Southeast attractions I had wanted to see. His English was excellent and so was his attitude. His car was extremely comfortable. We tipped him well past the asking price of 70 euros, and it was well worth it.

I am looking forward to booking with Esmeraldo next time, and seeing either the Northwest or the Southwest. He can be found at jecaldeira@netmadeira.com

“Very nice scenery but a bit windy to appreciate it all...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

It reminded us of a welsh or Cornish coast line especially as it was very windy and grey! However that said there is a nice walk, plenty of parking ( not sure about high season though) and lovely scenery.

“Wonderful walk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

This is a great day trip from Funchal. There is easy bus service from downtown, or you can get a meter taxi (which is not cheap - around 50-55 euros) and walk is not easy but not too difficult either. Be aware that there is no shade (we both got a bit burnt) and no facilities en route: towards the end there is a rest-stop with information about the site and picnic benches, but the toilets were closed when we went there. The views are spectacular towards both Porto Santo and the Ilhas Desertas, and there are a couple of spots where you can dip your feet in the water if you want. The trail is very easy to follow, in part because there are always people on it, and the whole roundtrip should take about 3 hours of walking.
