“may be my favorite zoo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2014

We make it a point every time we travel to visit the local Zoos and Aquariums. This may be my favorite zoo! It's large, clean, inexpensive, but most of all the animals appear happy! They have been created new areas for many of the animals. None of the animals looked unloved (which is actually the sad, true case in most zoos).

Do yourself the favor and take the train ride. It's short, informative, and really helps you get your bearings for exploring the zoo.

“Wonderful Attraction for All Ages!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2014

This zoo was unlike many others I have been too. It was very clean which impressed me compared to many zoos around the country that I have toured. It was very quite for a Sunday, but it was also a bit chilly when we visited. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The animals looked to be well taken care of. The majority of the animals were out roaming among their separate areas. The orangutans were my favorite and are a must see for anyone visiting the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk.

“Zoo-tastic!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2014

The is the best place to just walk around and take in the allure of the animals as well as the beautiful grounds. I love seeing the giraffes and the knew monkey/gorilla area is spectacular.

I loved this zoo. The way it is set up was great. All of the animals looked to me that they are well taken care of. They have plenty of space and great enclosures.

“See the animals up close”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2014

This zoo really impressed me. The exhibits and habitats are so well designed. Not only do the exhibits have signs to teach you about the animals, but they also have signs and displays explaining the life of the people of that region. The signs teach you about how the animals and people interact, how people are often encroaching on the animals' habitat, and how changes people are making will keep the animals from extinction.
The zoo is well-designed with the animals having space while still being very close to the viewer; the giraffes especially look like they are close enough to touch. You can also walk through the area where the animals are kept at night, so kids really understand how zoo animals live.
The food court had good quality fast-food type offerings (burgers, hot dogs, fries, chips). The train costs $2 per rider (the money goes to making future exhibits); it's not a long ride, but is relaxing.
