Having stayed in other B&B's my wife and I can only say that the Freemason Inn was a complete disapointment and overpriced. Our room was the East India Tea Room and the bed was too large for the room. The air conditioner was much too noisy and the shower was a curtain around the inside of the bathtub. The bathroom was dirty, my wife obersrved small bars of soap under the tub and there were hairs in the bottom of the tub.

Breakfast was okay....if you liked what was prepared. You are not offered a choice but given what the "chef" prepares. Every other B&B we have stayed at we were offered at least one alternative. My wife does not like syrup and even after mentioning it the morning of the first breakfast, she was given french toast with syrup the next morning.

For $165 a night we expected better and I would not recommend it.

“Very Elegant and Friendly Place”

I called the property directly and reserved the Wishing Oak suite a few weeks before our wedding night. We informed the innkeeper that we would be checking in late, which they assured us would not be a problem. When my wife and I arrived at close to midnight we retrieved our room key from a small lockbox inside the door and made our way up to the room. It was spacious and immaculate to say the least, and it had a very classic appeal--- not too many frills or flower print adourning every surface. This is a nice B&B that doesn't make you feel like you're staying the night in your grandparents' guest room. The bathroom was equally large and accomodating, and the jacuzzi tub (not really shown on the website) was huge and worked very well (I'm 6'11" and we both fit very comfortably with room to spare). Breakfast was also wonderful. The on-site chef is great, and we had a chance to chat with the other couples and Bob Epstein, the innkeeper, who is a very well-traveled and interesting person. Sorry to say that we didn't have the chance to sample the afternoon wine and cheese, but as you can imagine that was a very busy time for us! This was the perfect end to our wedding weekend. If you live in the area and are looking for a romantic getaway or are staying downtown but want to avoid the large-scale commercial hotels, this is the place. Located in downtown Norfolk and minutes away from Ghent, and they will lend you bicycles to get around (my preferred method of travel in Ghent). Thanks to Bob and all the staff for a wonderful stay.

“Charming Bed and Breakfast”

Freemason Inn Bed and Breakfast

Feb 22, 2008

I used to live around the corner from this bed and breakfast and had always wondered what it was like inside. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the decorations were charming and the people friendly. Breakfast was customized for my eating habits (I'm a vegetarian) and as wonderful every day of our six night stay. The beds were wonderfully comfortable, if it weren't for the fact that breakfast was so good I don't think I would have bothered getting out of them all day! Leslie was exceptionally accommodating and left a few romantic surprises for my husband and me. We will certainly be returning.

My husband and I booked a room at the Freemason Inn for our wedding night. We had heard great things about it. Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience from the first moment we got there. We had arranged for a late check in due to the fact that it was our wedding night. When we arrived (in wedding gown and tux), the place was locked up. We tried repeatedly to call the after hours #. After 25 minutes, a less than friendly woman came to the door and said, "were you trying to call here?". Apparently, new owners had taken over after I had booked my reservation..and there are new policies that no one had bothered to tell me about. When we finally made it up to our room, the air conditioner was not on, and it felt like it was 120 degrees. The next morning we were supposed to receive breakfast in our room, but it never came. When we questioned the new owner and the woman from the night before (who happened to be the 'chef'), they said they had knocked and it was too hard to wake us up... We had been up for over an hour! They said they wanted us to go ahead and eat the saran-wrapped food that they saved for us. It was rubbery and disgusting! I told them it was the worst experience I have ever had in a B&B. It seems like they really need to get their act together and show some hospitality and professionalism.
