“Great value for the price!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2012

We stayed here three days for a military veterans convention. Yes, the hotel is a bit older than some, but it is in great condition and a wonderful value considering the price of other newer hotels in the area. It's within walking distance to the waterside attractions, which is where most of our activities were, but it's also just a few blocks away the other direction to the mall and plenty of restaurants and bars. The staff was outstanding and had us ready for an early check-in, and the process itself was only about 5 minutes. Also, when checking out it only took about two minutes. Samantha, who checked us in, also checked us out and even though it had been three days since she had seen me she greeted me by name on sight. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the area. The only issues I had were very minor in nature: the only ice machine is on the 7th floor and after going up there it wasn't working. I had to go to the bar on the ground floor to get ice. Also the elevators are a bit small and, due to their age, a little scary, but the worked just fine. All in all this hotel is a great value for the price and if we were in the area again we would certainly stay here again!

If you are looking for a basic hotel with few amenItIes then this is your place. Do not stay there for a special occasion. There are no HD televisions. The ice machine is on the 7th floor. The drink machines do not work properly. If you have allergies be wary.
The hotel is right in the middle of downtown. Look for an 'ambassador' to advise you on the places to see. Most places are in walking distance. Norfolk is a great city to visit.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel 3 years ago when we went to Norfolk to attend our son's university graduation. The people were very friendly and extremely helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable and we found the rates very affordable. Everything seemed to be within walking distance, too, and we would highly recommend the Tazewell Hotel.

Room Tip: For optimum comfort ask for a room higher than the second floor. There is a bar nearby that sometim...

A few buddies of mine got together in VA for a quick reunion and lucked out to find the Tazewell in Norfolk had an open room for the night. Considering we booked late on the day of our stay, we were very impressed!

-Rate was very good for a downtown hotel so close to everything
-Hotel is 106 years young, in great shape, and has a cool history to it
-Overall hotel in great shape and very clean...can tell the staff takes pride in your stay
-On a corner with not many markings/signs, so you have to really look for it on Granby. We passed by once, but then found it quickly after
-Parking was included in the garage right next door...very nice perk for being in the city. For more than 1 car, there are also several parking garages within walking distances that are inexpensive
-Very close to all the happenings on Granby street...clubs/bars/food/waterfront
-Staff was very friendly and helpful. We had requested a pull-away bed, which was in the room awaiting our arrival
-Room was large and clean and had normal hotel amenities
-Have fun with turning on the shower head...took me a minute or two to figure that one out :-)

Would definitely stay at the Tazewell again!

Room Tip: It appears to be a fairly small hotel, so my guess is any room with a window will have a great city...

What a fantastic experience! The hotel is in a fabulous location with plenty to choose from in the way of dining, shopping and cultural events. The desk staff, including Samantha and two very helpful gentlemen were amazing!

Room Tip: I had a not-so-lovely view of the parking deck. It didn't bother me but I would imagine, being o...

4 stars. Not because it's a four star hotel. It isn't. Yup, it's old. The elevator is tiny, the stairs creak and some wallpaper is peeling. The one ice machine is on the 7th floor. No pool, no weight room, no giant breakfast buffet. If you want to park in the garage next to the hotel it's 15.00 and you need to have an employee let you in if you need to get something out of the car.

But it has everything my wife and I like. Funky atmosphere, vintage decor and architecture, great location in the heart of the arts district, tons of restaurants and bars nearby (including two in the building), super comfy bed, it's clean, it's safe, AC worked great on a 98 degree day, free wi-fi (that can about cancel out the parking fee right there) all the folks were helpful and friendly. Another reason for 4-stars is the noon, that's right noon, checkout. That is positively civilized in our book.

It's not for everyone--some folks are Holiday Inn Express, others like something with more character. Don't get me wrong, the Holiday Inn Express is great when you're stopping on the Interstate, but when you're going to a destination I want something different. Someplace that makes an impression. If that's you as well, then check in and check it out.

BTW we visited Norfolk to see Michael Franti and Spearhead at the Norva Theater—right around the corner, how cool is that.

Room Tip: No pool, no room service. didn't bother us.
