“A "Hidden Gem" in a beautiful Norfolk neighborhood-we loved it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2012

This lovely, quiet house is home to the private collection of the Sloane family. The collection is a bit eclectic, ranging from Tang Dynasty objects, to Tiffany lamps, to religious icons from Tsar Nicholas II's private collection. There are also contemporary works of American artists, and the house, with its intricately carved wood paneling, is a work of art in itself. There are silver sets, snuff boxes, bronze sculptures, and wooden "kitchen witches". The Arts and Crafts style house was built in 1908, expanded several times, and by 1937 was a 42 room mansion. Mrs. Sloane was an avid collector and patron of the arts, and the collection you see at The Hermitage was 50 years in the making. There are self guided tours, guided tours, and a lovely outdoor garden. Interestingly there is also an emphasis on the creation of oyster reefs and the planting of native grasses along the Lafayette River area of the property. I went with a few friends and we loved it.

“Beautiful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2012

We did not tour the house because we were enjoying the gardens and the beautiful views of the water but what we did see inside was beautiful. The garden was a perfect place for a picnic...definitely a nice, relaxing spot that was not over-crowded!
