“A secret sweet spot in Norfolk!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2012

If you like what my husband and I like to call tasty beers, then this place is for you. Forget the budwiser, coors or miller lites, here at The Birch you will find what seems like a neverending list of imported delicious beers from you name it! Their menu is ordered by brewery, style of beer, alcohol %, country of origin. The bartender is very knowledgable about the beers too. For example, if there was a beer you liked and wanted to try something similar, he was pretty much right on the money when offering a similar type and taste that you would like. As far as eating, this place serves cheese boards to pair with beers, some small snacks like nuts, pretzels, and grilled cheese sandwiches. I wouldn't say its a place to have dinner, really you go there for the beer and the laid back, comfortable atmosphere, and excellent service!

“EXCEPTIONAL!! ONE OF A KIND!! THE BEST!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2012

If you're looking for the same old, typical pub grub, blah-blah-blah on tap, and a bar-tender who doesn't know your name after your first visit---then you might want to try someplace else instead.
On the other hand, if you're like me and other Birch regulars, and you relish the thought of an amazing craft beer, you actually would like to hear the person you're speaking to, you don't feel the cravings of an addict for a TV blaring, and you actually appreciate that your bartender will not only know your name after your first visit, but will have thoughtful suggestion for something that you will really enjoy, then Birch Bar is THE place.
The "eats" menu is somewhat limited, but that's alright--have dinner before or afterward. The atmosphere is eclectic and relaxing, and the beer is outstanding. It can be a little pricey, but remember, you're getting beer that you would have a very hard time getting anywhere else--except if you were traveling to the country where it was brewed. Well worth the effort!!
Enjoy,

“beer snobs' paradise”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2011

This establishment has a very limited tasting menu - their specialty is beer. They have TONS of beers / ciders available, so if you're an enthusiast, you're set. If you're looking for mixed drinks or even the normal offering of sodas, though, seek life elsewhere. Ambiance is aspiring to a monastery or European cellar type place, but it falls short and looks more like decorative apathy. Pro: I had a 'vintage' cider that was out of this world. Con: It left me feeling overly yucky the next day for that small an amount of alcohol. And it was $20 a bottle. There is some really expensive stuff on the menu. Watch out for the prices.
