“Friendly sports hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2014

We stayed at the Galomar on a health and fitness break, where use of the gym and a number of 1:1 fitness tuition sessions was part of the package.
The hotel is located about halfway between the airport and Funchal, right on the coast. Rooms are spacious and clean, ours had a small balcony. The pool area is spacious and was never crowded - there's a pool at the hotel level as well as another down by the rocky cover. The weather when we were there (early June) was very bright and sunny but also very windy - and there's not a lot of protection from that wind at the upper pool. I think it might have been a little unseasonal though, so perhaps we were unlucky.
The breakfast buffet was very generous with lots of choice - there was always a lovely fruit salad and lots of different breads (also cooked buffet if you chose). My partner had a birthday whilst we were there and they dressed the table for us (a surprise!) and presented us with a complimentary bottle of Prosecco - unexpected and much appreciated. The main hotel dining room didn't appeal to us in the evening (we were there at the same time as a number of groups who were travelling half board) but there are other places to eat at the resort. We particularly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere in the bar area down on the cliff. We were less keen on the formal fish restaurant.
What really made our stay were the very friendly and professional fitness staff from the hotel gym - the Onda Club. We had some great tuition - from outdoor circuits, to power jumping, squash, pilates and body balance. There's also a very nice spa.
There's no wifi in the rooms, but there is wifi (a bit temperamental sometimes) in the public areas.

This is the second time we have travelled to Maderia and the first time we have stayed at Hotel Galomar . The hotel and the staff are fantastic , a special mention to Susana Capitao one of the waitress , she is a amazing and really made us feel welcome as did all the staff . 99% of the guests are German , so be careful if your a english speaking person , we did feel very isolated. In fact we where the only english people in the hotel .

The rooms are definatly 3 star and very very basic even for a 3 star , and the hotel needs upgrading . However as a guest of the hotel the whole resort is yours to use , the main pool is nice with a restaurant, the lido a sea swimming area is amazing , I loved swimming in the sea l, however the staff from the Mata ray - diving centre are rude and if you are not german, have no intrest in speaking to you , when i asked a simple question in english and was given a salcastic rude reply in english , they speak good english but it seem unless you are booking a tour with them they have no intrest , counter this with the helpful polite life guard at the lido , when I got sung by a jelly fish the dive instructors did not care abit , but the life guard was helpful .
So in general a nice enough hotel but we will not be returning .

Room Tip: Do not choose the 3 star , no aircon , need upgrading .

We stayed in the galo resort over christmas and New Year. We stayed in the smaller hotel galomar which is quite old and could do with a refurbishment. Our room was very basic and didn't include tea & coffee making facilities. Also, the television in our room was pretty basic and only had one English channel whichj was the news ( It got to the point that my teenage daughter actually started to enjoy watching the new!!!) However, you are able to use all the facilities of the more modern hotel, galosol. This is where you have your breakfast an d main meals which are lovely. There are a variety of excellent foods to choose from! Be warned this hotel is definately targeted a lot more towards the Germans! However once they know you are English, they do remember and speak to you in English! would definately go back as the resorts facilities were excellent even if our room wasn't. Would definate;y recommend you go there as it is great food, fabulous location and good facilities!

p.s there is no evening enterainment, which seemed a bit odd considering it was christmas time.

Very good hotel with helpful staff. The great plus - the hotel is not far from the airport and Funchal. You can reach it by bus № 155 (1,7 euro). I recommend to choose the express one, 15 minutes and you are in Funchal against 30-40 minutes by usual bus. The bus station is near the hotel Galosol.
I had breakfast and dinner. It was really very good and tasty.
In the hotel there are a lot of German)) So all staff speak German and English of caurse. Aclually, the staff speak German by default =) I don't know German and it was funny when every evening in the restaurant a waiter asks me in German what the number of my room)))
Portuguese are very pleasant, but their English is not so good... ))
I was in Madeira for 2 weeks and enjoyed it. There are wonderfull nature, good food and wine, pleasant people, perfect weather and warm ocean!

I was in mid september, spend two weeks and have found in Madeira something very special. It was far beyond common summer holiday.
Hotel is placed in Canico de Baixo (Lower Canico) right beside water.
Well, there is elevator for the beach where you can choose pool or ocean swimming.
If you want to explore Madeira, there is excellent rent-a-car service or public bus to Funchal (every 15 min, 1.2 EUR/ticket). Station is located 100 m from hotel.
Staff was realy very helpful.
And breakfast... excellent.
For the end, we`ve got 5 AM morning capuccino, croisant and fruit sallad, since we had an early flight.

I did not write about anything else, exept the hotel,
but there is such a lot of things to do and to see on the whole island.
Don`t miss it !!!

This for us, was truley a magical experience, with friendly, excellent staff, throughout the hotels, always asking if their was anything we needed, and the answer always was no, they had thought of everything, arrival was warm and welcoming, our room beautiful, large bright with outstanding views, breakfast a choice of dinning in our outside on the terrace, and so much choice, staff excellent, an lunch, the choices just went on and on, and where to eat, in the terrace bar or downstairs in the resturant, both, offered food of an extremly high standard, beautifuly prsented, taste delious and the price was so good!
we had the hard job of choosing!!! 5 bars, two outdoor pools, one indoor pool both have lifegaurds - quiet seating in or out of the sun, private access to sea, Excellent gym, sauna, squash courts, jaquzzi, sauna, steam room, weekly activities programe in your room for you to do if you choose, diving centre, there was so much to do, itsd your choice to do as little or as much as you choose, live music in the evenings!
their is a beautiful spa, offering a very large choice to treatments, and courses at very affordable prices - exceptional value!
There is a supermarket, hairdressers, tourest information office, just two minutes walk up the side of the hotel.
They have made our hoilday a wounderful and unforgettable experience, and we cannot wait to go back! Thankyou x

The Galomar is part of the Galo Resort Complex. The rooms in the Ondamar complex are more luxurious, but the Galomar is cheaper.
If you stay in the Galomar, you can use all facilities of the Galo Resort.

The Galo Resort has a very nice fitness center that guests can use.

The Hotel is a good location for diving and hiking. From the Galomar, the diving base is a 2 min walks away and you will find that a number of hotel guests are divers and hikers.

Breakfast is good, but the same every day. I didn't go for half pension, since there are restaurants in the vicinity and I didn't want to be tied to the half pension times.
