“Excellent as usual!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

I visited madeira last week again and yet again had my meals at Lareira.Food was constantly of good quality and tasty.Fish fresh and meat so tender.Tried Picanha and grilled squids for the first time, absolutely delicious!
Luckily, thanks to the extensive menu, there's still plenty of new dishes to try next time.I also had the the most amazing vinho verde there.I'm very much looking forward to my next visit in March.

“lovely food opposite town square”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

lovely food at reasonable prices- The starters are huge. Mushrooms with large prawns were yummy! Also the soups were very tasty. Mains were good- too full for desert! Wines very reasoable too.

“Lovely food nd good service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2012

Nice choice of local dishes and pastas. Price really good and wine also very reasonably priced. Friendly staff who don't push you to finish or order another course.

“Best Steak I have ever had!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2012

As above! Read some reviews on here before choosing to visit the restaurant. After looking at the extensive menu decided to go for the Flambe (recommended below) and I wasn't disappointed. The chef brought my steak to me before cooking to show me and it was huge. He cooked it outside on the terrace and i could smell it before it came to the table. Never mind the recommendations about sharing courses! We had garlic bread, a starter each (1 prawns and mushrooms and 1 tropical fruit with smoked ham) a steak each which we both loved and i finished off with an almond pie. Thoroughly stuffed! 3 Cokes and 1 Large Coral Beer all in was €57 which we were delighted with. Excellent steak, excellent seafood. well worth a visit.

It is across the road from the square in Canico, just up the street from the cemetery before the one way loop.

I phoned to book ahead as it was a Saturday night but when we arrived I realised there was no need.

“5 star flambe, 4 star fish!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2012

The title sums it up. Fish was fine but slightly overcooked (as it often is here). The flambe steak is what puts this place on the map. A wonderful piece of thick fillet about three times normal London size, prepared with brandy, madeira, cream, green peppercorns, worcester sauce, loads of paprika into a rich spicy, just below hot, wonderful copious sauce. The waiter/chef is justifiably quietly proud of what will undoubtedly turn out to be the best dish I've had on holiday here. It's his signature dish and he could get a job in any top restaurant because of it. Go and order it and forget the fish!
