I went to Vilamoura working and I stayed at D. José Beach Hotel. A very nice experience. The rooms are comfortable and the breakfast is really good. This 3 star Hotel could have more stars. The location is just in front of the beach (you just need cross the pedonal road). People in the reception is very kind and the final experience is really good and professional.

We booked this hotel at last minute (day before) because it was on the beach and had a good price. Was pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness of the rooms. HUGE hotel. Very clean. Very sparse rooms, but you don't need more than that. Breakfast was nice. Location was great. Recommend for a quick budget stay.

Stayed here for a week in October. Great location on the beach and surrounded by plenty of restaurants. Staff were very friendly and speak good English. We didn't pay for a sea view room as we only spent minimal time there. Room was very clean and comfortable. Bathroom replenished each day, no tea or coffee making but we didn't find this a problem.
Pool area very clean but decking does get hot in the sun so flip flops essential. Hotel does not hire pool towels so bring your own or buy locally for around 10euros.
Alphonso restaurant just round the corner does good steak and his chocolate cake dessert is amazing.
20 minute walk or 6 euro taxi takes you to upmarket Vilamoura with casino and more choice of restaurants great for evening entertainment. all in all great value.

Just spent 10 wonderful days at this hotel. Our first time in Portugal and it will not be the last.Like others have said do not be put off by the back entrance of the hotel as once you step inside its wonderful. Clean very modern and lovely friendly staff. We had a sea view room on the top floor and what a view. The rooms were lovely modern and spotlessly clean and comfortable beds. The food was good we were on half board and we never left anything on our plates. Not the biggest buffet but all the food was good. No complaints at all.( If it wasn't quite as hot as you like there was a microwave to re heat it.( It is hard to keep buffet food piping hot.). Did not see any entertainment as we went for a walk after dinner. The pool was nice too small but never crowded and could always get a chair or sun bed easily. The beach was lovely 1 minute across a lovely traffic free road/prom.The sea is quite cold but it is the Atlantic ocean. We did go in most days. Pleasant walk both ways one to the local fishing harbour and fish and fruit market. Pleasant bars to have lunch snacks and drinks all along. Our favorite was just down the road opposite fish market . sorry cannot remember the name but it specialize in Brazilian food . We did not taste this but other snacks were lovely. For a nice relaxing break with good food and accommodation this is certainly the place for you. We shall be looking to book up again for next year. Thank you to all the staff at the hotel you were great. See you again soon.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor and pay extra for sea view its worth it.

a nice location if you like your hotel next to the sea, there are lot of restaurants around the hotel, but food bought at the Dom Jose restaurant cheaper compared to other local restaurants. Staff very helpful, friendly. (No kettle in the room, the safe was broken, in the room i was given there were 2 single beds together to form a double bed but that wasnt a very good idea because i nearly fell through between the 2 beds, BEDS werent very comfortable compared to other 3 star hotels I've used before.

Room Tip: sea view rooms are nice

Stayed here in early October after reading so many positive reviews on this site and we were not disappointed. Decided not to pay extra for a seaview room as we intended to spend minimal time in the room anyhow and that proved to be a wise choice. There are many exaggerated descriptions of the views at the front of the hotel with many describing the rooms as overlooking a car park, in fact it is just a hard standing / lay by which can only accomodate 10-12 cars and is the sort of view you can expect at many city center hotels around Europe with many residential properties and other hotels backing onto the Dom Jose, was definately no issue for us.
Room was quite small although it was bright and very modern and maintained to a high standard, ( looked to have been refurbished in the not too distant past ) shower was very powerful with a consistent supply of hot water also. House keeping standards in the public areas were to a very high standard, staff were mainly cheerful, polite and friiendly, especially the restaurant staff, bar staff not so much although they had a very difficult job with the very popular " happy hour " each night which kept the lobby bar full until after 10pm with a convivial, lively atmosphere. Only thing that holds the Dom Jose back is the food, not the quality which is fine, just the lack of variety which seems to be dictated by space constraints in the restaurant. Highly recommended due to the value for money this property offers including but not exclusively discounts on wine in the restaurant every evening along with the aforementioned " happy hour " in the main bar.Only minor negative is the fact that aircraft departing Faro follow a flight path directly over the hotel although there appears to be a noise curfew between 23.00 and 06.00 and we found it never affected our sleep quality. Four star quality accommodationat a three star price, will likely return at some point in the future.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2013

I came here in October with my family (parents, brother and sister in law) for a fabulous 10 days break from the busy working life of back home.
The hotel is very good for a 3-star. My parents visited 5 years ago and there has been some considerable refurbishment since then. The hotel is not flash - but clean and excellently located right along the promenade overlooking the ocean - sea view a must! Breakfast is good (although a little more choice perhaps would benefit but completely fresh and adequate). The bar prices are fair for hotel standards and the pool is nice although quite small. In October we had no problem getting around the pool but in the height of season I imagine this could be a problem. As other visitors have noted there's a charge for sunbeds on the beach (which weren't even an option Oct) - this would have cost the family an additional 500 euros if we all wanted a sunbed on the beach during the day.
The resort itself was quiet as the busy season had just finished the week before - but there were still plenty of restaurants serving very good food. 'Oceanos' was our favourite (the guy owns it with his mother who in turn owns the only butchers shop in the local market. We tried meat and fish here and it was all excellent).
Vilamoura is 20/25 mins walk away and a great alternative for either daytime/nightime food and the walk takes you along some alternative parts of the beach with some fairly good beach bars/cafes.. The bus services run from the street behind the hotel so we also went to Albufeira for a day with little problem.
All in all a lovely break and I would certainly go back. One point to note if you're a younger traveller.....maybe not for party-goers or hardcore boozers. The hotel (certainly at the time we went) was dominated by a more elderly clientele. This wasn't a problem for me and my family at all but may not be the right option for others. I am mid-thirties and would say my brother and I were the youngest there by quite a bit....My mother (63) was delighted that in a couple of DECADES time she would be able to go on holiday like this lot - brilliant!..xx
