“One of the highlights of our trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2007

My husband and I stayed here in May 2007. We were originally booked to stay here for 5 nights but loved it so much we extended our stay.

Silvia and her boyfriend Luca were charming hosts and very very helpful. We told Silvia we were interested in sampling wines and Silvia recommended some good wineries that were nearby. She also gave great recommendations for nearby osterias and trattorias.

They treated us like family. Nothing was too much trouble for them.

We stayed in the apartment "La Roccia". The view from our bedroom window was stunning. The apartment was huge and very rustic. It was furnished with antiques and felt very welcoming. We loved sitting outside at night at our table looking over the valley with our prosciutto and chianti.

The air is so clean and fresh.

The final drive from the main road to the farmhouse must be taken slowly as it is a dirt road but we managed it every day with a smallish rental car without problems.

If you looking for a real Tuscan experience, staying in a big old farmhouse with views that stretch forever - don't hesitate to book this place. We're already planning our next trip there.

I am very surprised at the previous reviews; we stayed here for a week at the beginning of September, and loved it from the moment we arrived! We also met other couples who were staying there, and they all were very impressed.

We were held up in traffic coming through Florence, and only got to the farmhouse after 9 in the evening. Sylvia's parents met us, and were very warm and welcoming. They prepared a light dinner for us - bread, cheese, italian sausage, salad, and of course, chianti wine - which they served in the vaulted wine cellar/dining room, and it was a fantastic introduction to the charm and hospitality of Tuscany!

My husband and I stayed in the Roccia, and our daughter stayed in the Rosa , and we all loved the accommodation - very roomy, old and rustic, beamed ceilings, and furnished with antiques and very comfortable beds. Even better was the view of the countryside that greeted us the next morning! We also loved the pool - it was great to go for a cool dip at the end of the day!

Of course there are bugs here - such is the nature of the countryside (and the nature of old stone farmhouses)! Besides bugs, we also saw a deer grazing in the field 2 mornings, and a jack rabbit bounding along the road 2 evenings.

We were very lucky with the weather - not a cloud the whole time we were there, with warm temperatures during the day, and cool temperatures in the evening.

We found the location of the farmhouse excellent. It is within easy driving distance of Florence and Sienna, but with these 2 cities, I would recommend taking the train instead - traffic is horrendous, and parking is nearly impossible to find! Pisa is also fairly close by. Better than that, there are numerous small towns (I especially recommend visiting San Gimignano) and villages, as well as vineyards, all worth visiting. And the food and wine are fantastic! Sylvia or her parents are glad to provide suggestions of places and towns to visit, as well as restaurants (all excellent)!

We have done alot of travelling around Europe in the last year or so, and we would have to rank this trip to Tuscany and La Ghiandaia as one of the best! The accommodation, hospitality and scenery are awesome! If you are looking for a nature/art/food/wine/history oriented trip, this is the place to be!

A previous review, made La Ghiandaia sound like the worst place in the world. Having read the review 3 days before departing I was deeply concerned, but thought I would reserve judgement until I had seen for myself.

La Ghiandaia is approximately 20 mins drive from Greve in Chianti. An old farmhouse nestling in the hills, it is approached via a 1km dirt track. The track it has to be said is not suitable for low slung sports cars and our rental Alfa struggled at times to get ground clearance.

Anyway on arrival we were met by the charming owners who made us feel very welcome. We had booked the largest of the appartments and having been told it would sleep 7 found this to be the case. In fact the number of beds provided meant you could have slept 8. The only thing to be aware of is that there is 1 bedroom on the ground floor and 2 on the 1st floor but these 1st floor bedrooms are at opposite sides of the appartment with one being accessed by a spiral stair case (which could be a struggle for people of a senior age).

The rest of the appartment was fine, with a rustic charm. The kitchen benefited from a proper oven and 4 gas ring hob (which we later found out was not the case for the majority of the appartments which tended to have in some cases no oven and just a couple of electric rings).

The appartment was dark inside as the windows are very small but many of the other appartments had large windows and were light and airy.

The vista from the house is stunning and the swimming pool was set in prime position to enjoy the views. I do not know if it was the mixed weather, or the fact that the house is at c. 550m above sea level but the pool was a bit chilly. Not something you would want to dive into straight away, although our children did not seem to mind. After a few days you tended to get used to the temperature so not too bad.

There were as a previous reviewer commented a lot of insects. We had to deal with 2 wasp nests, and there appeared to be a lot of horse flies which rather put one off from going on any walks around the grounds, which was a shame.

However all in all I would say I was pleasantly suprised by La Ghiandaia. The previous reviewer I feel has been a bit harsh and whilst I have no experience of other holiday villa/appartments in Tuscany/Chianti I felt that La Ghiandaia offered good value for money - and remember you get what you pay for.

Would we return? I am not sure, but that might have as much to do with the mixed weather we had than anything else.

  • Liked — stunning scenery and very rustic
  • Disliked — variable weather perhaps because of altitude and the insects
  • Tips/Secrets — try the owners local chianti very good

The large apartment which we were offered was practically underground, and very dark with a very low ceiling. No good if you are remotely claustrophobic. Silvia’s parents then offered us another room, which was pretty much the same, but slightly bigger and with a wasp nest in the chimney, which was being dealt with. – so we kindly declined and left.
The place is rife with insects both inside and out. – with no screens. So to go out and appreciate the surrounds is not easy if you have any dislike at all to insects. I know that Tuscany is in the country but I’ve never experienced such wildlife before! An evening would be impossible there as you would have to stay inside with the lights on and windows closed to avoid the insects (no air con either)
We’ve stayed in many beautiful places in Tuscany but will not go back here.
