“Not What I Expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2010

I chose this hotel based on the previous reviews. I just reread them and thought I must be reading about a different place. First of all there was no family running the hotel like the one described in the review. perhaps they were on vacation. The people at the front desk were barely able to give us any help with restaurants etc. The wifi only worked at fro about 10 minutes the first day we were there and even though we expressed a need to use the internet for just a few minutes due to family illness at home , no offer was made to help us out. The breakfast was the worst we had on our entire trip. There were no cakes or cheeses and hams , just a few cereal boxes and packaged cookies. We were offered one croissant each. It was so lacking that we decide out for breakfast the next morning even though breakfast was included. We asked about booking a reservation to a restaurant I read about on tripadvisor and the man at the desk allowed us to use his phone to book it. He pointed out the directions on a map , but failed to let us know that this restaurant was 9 kilometers from where we were and we were going to be walking back in the dark. Needless to say we never made it there. I like to walk but not in the dark when I don't know where I am going. It sounds like perhaps the hotel owners were away or that it is under new management. I would not recommend it based on my experiences.

That says it all .... we were greeted with warmth and made to feel at home.... our room was large and cozy .....and CLEAN! The bathroom was well equiped and also clean. The location was wonderful ....right on the main road, but not could not hear noise. But, the true highlight was the next morning ... the breakfast was the best we have ever had....that was included in the price of 90 euro. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Frankly, we were just looking for a place with Wi-Fi since we hadn't checked our e-mail in a few days, but this hotel gave us Wi-Fi and more! It's a small hotel, only a few rooms, but they're large, clean rooms with high ceilings and antique furniture. Some rooms have balconies. The bathrooms are large and clean.

The hotel is run by a young family...father at the front desk, his wife handling giving directions on nearby restaurants to the guests as she watches her young child play. The hotel is right downtown, a couple of blocks from the main town square and some great restaurants. We had wonderful gelato (double chocolate) at a place just a few steps from the hotel. After weeks of walking up and down hills in Tuscany, Greve was a pleasure because it's flat and easy to walk in.

There's a huge city-owned free parking lot just behind the hotel. The hotel has a bar. No English channels on TV. Great breakfast included with your room!

This hotel is on the main road in Greve in Chianti just a few minutes walk from the main square and looks quite new and uninviting from the outside. However, once you enter the hotel you can see that the owners really care for this place and have given it character and a real sense of homeliness. We were on a cycling holiday and our bags had arrived before us and the staff / owners were very friendly and welcoming, and had ensured that our bags had been taken to our rooms, which I thought was a nice touch. Our bikes were locked away behind a metal door within the confines of the hotel. Our room had a balcony, was very clean, had a safe and minibar as well as having it’s own individual character with lovely pictures on the wall. There was also wi-fi internet connection in the room for a fixed price of 5 Euros for our stay.

The whole hotel was filled with curios from around the world, but not in a brick-a-brack way, really interesting pieces that you could see had been chosen specifically for the place in which it was on display. There were lots of plants as well given the place a real homely, welcoming feel.

The breakfast was well thought out with a real personal touch – none of this getting up and helping yourself to a few bowls and plates of food laid out on one big table with people scrambling to get the last roll. Each table was caringly set out with bread, cakes, croissants, cheese and ham, little tubs of jam, nutella, cheese and honey as well as cereal, dried fruit and yoghurt and most importantly the best cup of tea that I had in Italy (with a huge choice) and it was steaming hot (most places we went to only had luke warm tea).

We stayed in a number of three star hotels on our trip all of varying degrees of quality (see other entries). This was by far the best hotel we stayed in in Italy and would recommend this place to stay, both in terms of quality and the staff / owners. Greve is also what I would class as a real place to stay as opposed to the tourist trap places like San Gimignano, which feel a little too sterilized and don’t feel as if people actually live there.

I really liked this hotel. For me it ticked all the boxes which I wasn’t really expecting it to as it looked like a very modern new build hotel from the outside. The greeting by the people running the place was warm, friendly and genuine. They accommodated our bikes without any problem in a secure space behind a locked door which made us feel better about leaving them.

The thing that strikes you about this hotel is how different the inside is to the outside. The outside is all modern brick work and façade, whilst inside the owners have made a real effort to give the place some character. The walls are adorned with quality black and white photos and furnished with a mixture of styles of furniture from different periods which works really well. There are lots of indoor plants to give the place some greenery and a small bar tucked into one corner.

The dining area is situated between a communal sitting room and the bar and feels like bright and pleasant place in which to have your breakfast. The location of this hotel is also excellent as it’s situated within a two minute walk to the central piazza of Greve in Chianti. There is also a large CO-OP supermarket next door to this hotel which is handy if you’re cycling or walking to stock up with food and drinks.

The breakfast is worth a mention here as well as it aimed to cover all dietary requirements without you even having to leave the table. Everything is brought to you, including cornflakes, sweet cakes, rice cakes, cheese (slices and spreadable), yoghurts, meat, tea, coffee, juice, bread, dried fruit etc. The food just seems to keep coming until space runs out on the table.

The room that we stayed in was very pleasant. Again you could see that an effort had been made to give the room a personal touch with the images on the wall and the style of the soft furnishings. Our room led out onto a large balcony that had a view onto main road with a table and a couple of chairs on it. There were also shutters on the windows and door to the balcony to keep out the light should you wish. The room was also very spacious and bright with a desk and small fridge inside. The bathroom again was very clean, large and well equipped.

I think the good thing about this hotel is that they have a modern building to work with, so all the rooms, bathrooms, etc. are catered for space-wise and then to give the place some character, the owners have come along and made this place more unique and special with their own touches which put together work really well.

I would definitely recommend staying here if you are in Greve in Chianti. Energy saving measures have been incorporated into the place as well with motion sensor lights on the stairs and a key to turn the electricity on in the room. What's not to like.
