Hotel La Palma is a fabulous, popular hotel in the quaint historic fishing village of Sant' Angelo, the most beautiful part of Ischia. Ischia is a destination still undiscovered by Americans, but is a favorite of Germans, Austrians and Italians. Associated with La Palma is the Hotel Il Fortino; I have stayed there twice once in 2006 and most recently in July 08. Il Fortino is situated above the La Palma and is about a 5-10 min walk up the hill. Don't go to Ischia unless you are very ambulatory; the walk up to Il Fortino is for the fit only. During my stay, very few people were at Il Fortino, which meant that after a delicious breakfast was served by genial hostesses, there is no one at the hotel. Lock your room and take your key. If you need anything, ask Nicola at the desk at La Palma. You will be offered a menu in the morning to choose your 5 course dinner served at La Palma (only in Deutsch and Italiano). The entertainment is a singer/guitar player (Dominic?) who will blow your mind with his voice. In America he would have stacks of CDs for sale and you would buy them! Your stay at either hotel will include entrance to the "Tropical" terme, generally a cost of about 16 Euro. But don't jump too quickly--my lunch there was 22 Euro! Delicious, yes, but I have never spent nearly $40 US on a lunch. The Tropical is really a bit dilapidated, and I would recommend going to Aphrodite instead---it is close by, much more beautiful, fabulous thermal mineral pools, and extraordinary treatments. As an alternative, you can walk down to the port and pay 3 Euro for a taxi boat to the beaches along the way. But while you are at either hotel, don't miss scheduling a physiotherapy session with the enchanting and infinitely talented Alfredo. You will never regret spending 60 Euro on this man.
Il Fortino is a peaceful, high class hotel, gorgeous views, beautiful rooms, a breathtaking experience which will make you feel like you own the village of Sant' Angelo. Go there if you want a few days of peaceful heaven between your action-packed trip to southern Italy.
