“Continental Terme - You Decide”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

The 4 star Hotel Continental Terme is about a 25 minute walk from Ischia Porto along the busy Via Michele Mazzella, which can be rather chaotic at peak times. The hotel has two outdoor pools and one indoor pool, together with various spa treatments. The rooms are reasonable but nothing special and lacked the things you would expect in a 4 star hotel such as tea-making facilities, make-up mirror etc - admittedly trivial but nevertheless expected. The entertainment is central to the hotel complex so it’s best to get a room furthest away, if you want to sleep before midnight.

The restaurant dinners were acceptable but in our opinion were along way short of other Italian hotels we have stayed in. All our food for the entire stay was edible but poorly presented and barely warm due to it being served from the waiters trolley at your table. We chose to eat out on several nights depending on the menu rotation. We also had the choice to ‘exchange’ dinner for a buffet lunch but this was only when a conference was held at the hotel. Talking of which the conference delegates virtually took over the hotel like a plague of locusts with the holiday guests being a minority. We felt like we were back at work with all the tablet PC’s and mobile phones and spent most days away from the hotel, such a shame. Buffet breakfast was standard fare with no apparent option for hot food, the nearest being toasted bread.

In our opinion the Continental Terme is more like a 3 star hotel - we were disappointed with the food, invasive conferences and dull atmosphere.

Overall the hotel is OK for a short stay but is most definitely not a holiday hotel, we are unlikely to return.

Room Tip: Perimeter rooms are quieter than the central area rooms.

This was my first visit to Ischia and was looking forward to it very much. The island did not disappoint at all, it is a very green island with beautiful views, also very clean and gentile and very safe to walk around Ischia in the evenings. Whilst the Hotel is very nice and the accommodation is set in beautiful surroundings, shrubs, fruit trees, swimming pools etc; our arrival reception was very poor, not very understanding staff, we were under the impression we had booked for twin rooms as single use (Thompsons need to have a clearer website) first they offered my brother and self one twin room, we explained we had booked two rooms and were then allocated single rooms each!! Whilst the rooms were okish, it was the attitude and lack of understanding of the reception that was disappointing, particularly after having had such an early start and many hours of travelling. The restaurant staff however were excellent and the food was plentiful and very good. The bar area was also nice to sit and have a drink and listen to the music. The terme was also a very relaxing experience, I also liked the different swimming pools set in different parts of the gardens. If you go to Ischia, a definite must is a visit to the "La Mortella Gardens" home of the late Lady Walton.

This was our 12th visit to this beautiful island and hotel. We absolutely love it, the staff in the hotel are fabulous, the island spectacular. Restaurant staff are second to none, the restaurant manager goes out of his way to make sure you have an enjoyable meal. The staff in the Olympia Bar and the Pianest are lovely, first class service always. As I have stated before in my
previous review if you are friendly and pleasant to the staff you get the service you wish for, yes you have paid to stay there but respect is a two way street. We have never ever felt unwelcome or felt that they did not wish to serve us. It does depend on how busy the restaurant is, bear in mind that August is the main holiday month for the italians and having said that we have been in August and still had the same exceptional service that they have always given.

Mina ,Thompson's travel rep, is so lovely, makes sure all are cared for so that you arrive on Ischia relaxed ready to enjoy all that it offers.

We look forward to our next visit.

Thompson's holiday .... everything went according to plan including a couple of hours on the plane. Mina our rep was an absolute gem, as is the island of Ischia and the hotel. I really do not need to say very much for GO there. It is a fantastic hotel, wonderful people, incredibly good beaches and food and loads of sexy men! Not to be missed!

Room Tip: Ask the hotel to move you on arrival if you are unhappy

Acquired a spa + stay deal from the hotel. Was so surprised to be provided with a room with a private garden. The room was so spacious, with a king-sized bed and a bed sofa. We were there on June 2010 and the lemon tree in the private garden was fruiting - such a pleasant surprise.
A great place to indulge yourself - spa, massage, pool or just laze around.

Room Tip: The room with private garden was spacious. It's located close enough to the pool.

Travelled to Ischia 3rd -10th August 2012. Flew with Thomsons from Newcastle to Naples then transferred to Ischia buy coach transfer & ferry.
Flights & transfers to Ischia were good & well organised. We were met by Mina (Thomsons Rep) who was very helpful & organised transfers etc. She also visits hotel a couple time per week & is always available to phone if you need help. Mina is from Ischia & very proud & passionate regarding her island.

Ferry from Naples to Ischia was one of the highlights as it was a beautiful day & the sailing & scenery was excellent passing by all the other islands in the Bay of Naples etc, on approaching Ischia you see just how beautiful the island is from a distance. So green & lush with the Castille Di Aragonas perched on a huge rock rising from the sea. Joined by a causeway, it really is a must to visit. 10 euros & well worth the entrance fee. You can either take the lift (not so good if you don't like being crammed in a hot sweaty box) but you can walk up & down though i imagine the walk up would have to be a stroll as it's quite steep. The walk down is easy enough. Views from the top are spectacular especially sipping a coffee or beer looking out from the cafe which is basically the starting point.
There is also a restaurant but was closed for some reason when we visited.

Back to the hotel. The hotel is lovely, had no problems at check in/check out. Room was very clean maybe could do with the bathroom being upgraded/renovated but adequate. We had a room with a pool view which has a small balcony which was lovely.

Mini bar/fridge also in room. Plenty of hanging space/drawers for everything we had.

You need a bathing cap to enter pools in Italy if you don't have one you can buy one from the spa for 2 euros also towel rental is good at 1.5 euros for your stay. Save weight in case & well holiday towels no one want to put them back in their case at the end of the holiday (do you).

Hotel is well laid out & areas around pool, bar etc were kept clean at all times.

It is a low rise hotel which was refreshing from all the high rise hotels being built nowadays.

We were on half board and that was the only thing that spoiled an otherwise excellent holiday.

First night (Friday) there is a buffet which was excellent plenty of choices especially if you like seafood. But sadly after then things went downhill badly.

The service at times was non existent & that is being kind. Not once at breakfast were we offered any cooked food(eggs/bacon) saw some going out to tables, it took them 3 days to offer us coffee. Not a real problem as there are stations where you can get coffee/tea.

Breakfast self service was typical continental style & adequate.

Dinner apart from the buffet was an experience i don't wish to repeat.

We ate only 3 times in restaurant due to the service & quality of the food. Though we had paid upfront when booking holiday for the week.

One time we waited 55 minutes after finishing our starter to being served our main couse & 40 minutes the other time with a 45 minute wait for dessert which was only ice cream.

The waiting staff all seem to run around like headless chickens but not actually getting anywhere. The restaurant manager was non existent & certainly there is a need for more organisation to be in force. If you are not on full or half board they charge 40 - 45 euros each for the set menu which is very poor value for money.

Yes it was busy when we were there with the majority of guests being Italian, who didn't seem to encouter the same problems, so maybe it was my lack of italian that was the problem. This hotel does not really cater for english speaking tourists which is disappointing as Ischia seems to be taking off with British tourists now.

Your not allowed to take the wine from the restaurant to the bar area after your meal, it's kept for you in restaurant for your next visit. I took my fiancee's wine out to bar area on the 1st night & was made to feel like a naughty school boy for doing so. I don't understand why this is not allowed but we never done it again.

Drinks are a wee bit more expensive in Ischia/Italy compared to other parts of europe but all in all ok.

Service at the bar area whether for drinks or lunch was very hit or miss. Like the restaurant really. Even when you go into the bar yourself to order one barman in particular found it hard to motivate himself to serve you. There is no feel good factor from staff in both the restaurant/bar every thing seems a monumental effort hardly a smile or a greeting. Infact thay all seem rather fed up & that's putting it mildly.

Only the bell boys/porters & housemaids gave you any response & in my opinion worked the hardest. These were the only ones we tipped. Maybe thats the problem being on half board etc is the staff do not get tipped on a daily basis. But if they had been more welcoming i would of tipped as i am usually a heavy tipper provided the service is good.

Would i stay at the Continental again, very unlikely. I think there are far better hotels on the island with better service & quality of food.

Visited Procida another island for the day which was good. Mina the Thomsons Rep sold us tickets 12 euro's each i think, but it was a lovely 25 minute sail across.

From hotel to marina it's a 30 minute stoll, same to the Castille Di Aragones.

I hope to visit Ischia again someday as it has not put me off regardless.

I have recently travelled with Thomson to the Continental Terme Hotel in Ischia. I want to make those of you using Thomson that their brochure description is misleading
a. Superior rooms as standard does not happen and is simply deceiving
b. Coach transfer does not happen and you have to struggle with luggage up two flights of stairs
on a dilapidated ferry
c. Had to wait four and a half hours at Naples airport on return Birmingham flight
Single rooms very small but Hotel was very helpful in moving me to a double room. Superb 30m
outdoor swimming pool.
Will I travel with Thomson again - absolutely not!
