My husband and I have just returned from Ischia – it was our first visit but I know it won’t be our last! We spent a long time trawling through the hotels on Trip Advisor before making our decision, as light sleepers we wanted a peaceful location but not too remote. The Hotel Grifo didn’t disappoint. It is located a short, uphill walk from the main road, surrounded by pine trees. Our room, a ground floor standard double, opened out on a small terrace on the side of the hotel. The room was of a good size with modern décor and spotlessly clean. The aircon was silent and very efficient, so much so that we had to keep turning it off! Needless to say we had excellent sleep, probably the best we have ever had in a hotel. Breakfast was served until 10.00am and was the usual array of cakes/pastries/fresh fruit salad plus hot dishes. All very good. We booked direct with the Hotel using their online booking system, this gave us a discounted rate plus the option of half board which included freebies such as a free anti-stress massage/facial, 50% discount to the thermal park at Castiglione, and a pick up/drop off at the ferry terminal. We dined at the hotel and also had a couple of lunches. The food was consistently very good with a superb cold buffet starter (a meal in itself) followed by the usual Italian pasta course followed by the meat/fish course and dessert. The pasta was always cooked to perfection, and we ate fish every night, some of which we had never heard of but all delicious. The Hotel staff were all excellent and spoke very good English (the restaurant staff even remembered which coffee/ wine we preferred). During the first few days of our holiday we left the hotel and visited other parts of Ischia using the local bus. It was August and Ischia was very busy which meant that even when a bus came you couldn’t guarantee getting on! Towards the end of our stay we had a day at the hotel, and practically had the place to ourselves. No problem getting sunbeds and no sign of anyone ‘bagging’ sunbeds at some ridiculous time in the morning! We made daily use of the Hotel’s excellent Wellness Centre, sauna, Turkish bath, thermal pool, relaxation pools etc, a perfect place to unwind after busy sightseeing. The last night of our holiday coincided with a public holiday and the owners of the hotel held a special gala night. It was very evident that the Grifo family were very proud of their Hotel and thought the world of all their staff (from our perspective it was akin to being part of a great family celebration). The following day both Sig. and Sig.ra Grifo were in reception as we departed (they were a quiet presence throughout our stay) We have been back in the UK 5 days and as we meet neighbours/friends they all comment on how well we both look. It’s a long time since we have felt so good and this can only be attributed to our marvellous stay at the Hotel Grifo – just what we needed!
