“See the sea but don't touch the sea !”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

We stayed at Hotel Santa Maria for 3 days and chose an option that included two what were described as meals ,breakfast and lunch or breakfast and dinner .I read other reviews of this hotel and initially was put off by the negative reviews but having read the last more recent one indicating 'new management' that was positive decided to take a chance.

We had a fantastic view of the beach from our balcony but were disappointed to note that we would have to pay additional fees to have an umbrella etc on the beach .When we did try to hire some there was none available so we could look at the sea from our balcony but not touch the beach.

The hotel is like travelling back in time and this hotel would have been beautiful about thirty years ago but it has not been updated since ,still having ancient wardrobes ,doors ,tables and chairs. The overall feel of the place is that it is uncared for.

Our room was basic but the walls were stained and the light fitting was hanging by a thread .One lamp did not work and the tv was showing occasional snowy channels . On the first day we had to go out and buy shampoo and shower gel because there was none but shampoo did appear on day two. The air conditioning did work and was an asset and the bed was reasonably comfortable although I am not entirely convinced of the hygiene of the bedding .

My biggest issue with this hotel was the paltry amounts of food and child sized portions. What was served tasted nice but a very limited amount .We also had to pay for water with our meals which due to the heat was unavoidable and there was no option of 'tap' water available .In the mornings IN ITALY there was no real coffee available for breakfast and we had to go and buy it at the hotel bar instead which I was disgusted with .No expresso for an ITALIAN breakfast !!!! I was also convinced that the bread we were served at breakfast was from the night before .It was dry and hard .Also at one point the water we bought for our meal was not cold due to a late delivery ,this in 35+ degrees weather .

The staff seemed disinterested but were on the whole professional .One gets the impression that they are not happy in their jobs .The only genuine smile we recieved was from our chambermaid who did her best to keep our room cleaned. The pool area is also nice and well maintained .

In terms of three stars this hotel is tetering but overpriced for what it offers .It has a lot to offer and a few minor 'comfort' changes such as not charging for water, providing proper coffee for breakfast ,not recycling bread from previous meals and adult sized food portions would greatly improve the overall experience of being there.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms facing the sea ,the most positive thing about this hotel is the sea view otherwise you...

Everything about this hotel was horrible. The staff was indifferent and inhospitable. The room had a leaking toilet, no hot water and a broken shower door. The only light fixture was hanging by a thread from the ceiling. The wait staff in the breakfast room could barelhy acknowledge our requests.

Wonderful family owned and operated hotel in LaHinch... Excellent restaurant and large enough to accomodate needs, yet small enough to have a Personal touch.
The McInerney Family is Synomonous with "A Thousand Welcomes".

Just arrived from a fabulous week in Sorrento, Italy from which I traveled to various sites on the Amalfi Coast. We had so looked forward to staying overnite in Ischia, as we've stayed in Capri in the past.
What a bitter disappointment!!! Firstly, the hotel is located quite a distance from the center of town. Secondly, the lobby is acceptable, the beach is right there, but oh boy! The room we were given was atrocious. The corridor had 3 lights of which only one was working. The room was painted bubble gum pink and the walls were decorated by the smashed bodies of insects which seemed to have been killed by years of past guests. The furniture was old, chipped and the veneer peeling away. The chandelier hanging from the ceiling was dropping down and the wires were exposed. I can't speak from personal experience, but this certainly looked like a scene from a "No Tell, Motel". Such was the condition of the room, that though the rate included dinner and breakfast the next morning, we decided not to stay. We did not want to gamble on what we would be served... We were offered another room that was measurably better, but we felt uncomfortable staying at a hotel that was obviously not well managed, clean or frankly very hospitable. We opted to pay for half the rate we were quoted, and left the island instead. After years of traveling stateside and abroad this was the first time a hotel was in such unacceptable condition. A real pity because frankly Ischia is lovely and we would love to go back. So traveler beware of those internet pictures and always keep your options open!
