“If you love plants this is a real treat and a must see!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013 via mobile

There are two entrances to this garden; the pedestrian one first, which is great if you can walk there or you are going by taxi. If you are in a car keep going past this entrance and follow signs to a car park at the other end of the garden where there is a second entrance. This garden is formed from a quarry and is mainly planted on two levels. The upper terrace is lovely and has fab views of Forio, but the lower terrace I thought was amazingly beautiful. We visited in August when often flowers have 'gone over', but not so at La Mortella ; planting in the lower garden particularly was still in flower. Just beautiful combinations of planting and water features. Many exotic plants i had never seen before. There are plenty of shady places to just sit and enjoy the perfection of the scene. Please note the hot house(1€ to go in) literally rains on you so don't take in bags/ cameras etc as they will get soaked!!

“The highlight of our holiday in Italy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

The Giardini La Mortella in Ischia rate were the highlight of this year's Italian break. Whether you are staying on the island or need to take a ferry over, the gardens are a place not to miss and a must see. Sir William Walton, the English composer, and his Argentine wife, Susanna, started this garden in 1949 and continued until her death in 2010. Not only is it a cool oasis amongst the heat of Ischia, but the wealth of plants, water features, pools and terraces, is both breathtaking and outstanding. Of real note for us were the Lotus flowers, blooming above their lush, fresh, flowers - bright pink and so delicate. Unlike many other Italian attractions there is a tea room and terrace plus a small garden shop. The Giardini La Mortella could get busy in the afternoon so we recommend getting a cab straight to the gardens (don't wait for the local buses with hoards of people) and spending at least two hours in paradise before the crowds arrive.
