“Another world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

The gardens were the most spectacular we have ever visited. Beautifully laid out with care taken to make the experience a pleasure for all visitors. The video about Mrs Walton and the making of the garden was fascinating. Lots of climbing but worth it. Plus lots of beautifully kept loos throughout grounds! We attended a concert in the evening whih was a magical never to be forgotten event.

“Do not hesitate to visit - the best day of our holiday, outstanding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2012

Giardini La Mortella, Ischia are spectacular gardens! After a recommendation from a friend we took a boat from Capri, where we were staying over to the gardens. We spent all day wondering around a small piece of paradise. La Mortella is the garden created largely by Susana Lady Walton, who was the widow of the distinguished English composer - William Walton. They bought their house, a few miles outside Forio, in the North West of Ischia, when the surrounding areas were bare and a precipitous limestone scree ('nothing but a quarry', according to their friend Larry Olivier) It is now a paradise of ferns, trees, flowers, and water features and is the perfect place - peaceful, fascinating to any keen gardener, and a haven of green in what can be a bare and rocky part of the world. We especially enjoyed the hour long video on Susana and her creating the garden, and the cafe where music composed by Walton was being played and Fortnum and Mason tea was offered! It should number 1 on everyones to-do lists when they visit this island. Reemember its only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9am onwards - check their website. Overall spectacular!

“Outstanding Gardens”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2012

I don't usually like visiting gardens but my wife does so I was reluctantly dragged to see La Mortella.
I actually enjoyed them so much that I had to be dragged away.
There was something very special about them that had a very relaxing influence on me. I really liked the video of Susanna who seemed an amazing person. I thought that the tea house was just great and we sat there for ages enjoying the atmosphere and the freshly squeezed orange,
If you travel to the lovely Island of Ischia this should be high up on your list of things to do.
