Description: We started Hayashi Williamsburg about 15 years ago with the idea of a quality Hibachi & Sushi Restaurant. We are proud of our staff and chefs for all they put into making each visit enjoyable and all our dishes tastefully prepared. When we opened our Newport News restaurant in City Center it was to continue in the tradition Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar with a nod to the updated look you might find in an upscale metropolitan restaurant. We also opened our doors in the Hampton area, located in Peninsula town center and offer a more eclectic contemporary non hibachi dine in grill and sushi bar.

“Amazing food, bad service!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2012 via mobile

So we came to Hayashi for a birthday party for a dear friend. We were seated at a table with two other guests. The party was planned ahead and reservations were made, it was clear we were celebrating a birthday. The couple looked frustrated that we were bombarding their quiet date. Come to find out we needed the extra room when unexpected guests showed up... so the hostess actually asked them to move to another table. Which was sorta rude since we were sat down second and they had already been seated for about 10 mins.

So and we waited for the rest of our party to arrive and once they arrived it took our server about 10 mins to notice our table was full. She came and introduced herself (Paula) and took drink orders. She got all eight of our orders... However she only brought 7 drinks. She forgot one of the party guests drinks. He ordered a diet soda. So about 5 mins went by and she came back to take our order. She realized then she forgot it. She took our order and we ordered a sushi appetizer and two meals to be cooked in front of us. She took everyone's order and another guest in our group also ordered sushi. She told my husband she would be back with his diet coke. So about 15 mins go by and she brought out the other guest's sushi roll. And still no diet coke. She disappeared for about 5 mins and they came out with our soup, and few mins later salad... Still no drink for him or our appetizer. She never hung around ling enough for us to tell her we wanted his drink or our sushi. She came to take away our soup and salad dishes... so she asked if there was anything we needed. The birthday boy spoke up and said what about their appetizer or his diet coke. And she acted very coy about it and said "Oh my I completely forgot to put in the order, do you still want it?" This was about an hour into our meal

That was the wrong thing to say... The right thing to say should have been, let me go get your items right away! So said "yes i was looking forward to my sushi" and he said I dont really want the diet coke now, it is too late. He had already drank his and mine complementary water with lemon. And even had both glasses on his side of the table, you would have thought she would have noticed.

So, the chef, was amazing. Carlos... He was fabulous. Great food, and entertainment.

After our meal we had to flag the hostess down for our checks. She came with the checks with the gratuity added already. I did not like that. I understand why it is done, however, her service was not even good. I wouldn't mind paying the forced gratuity for large parties, but she was awful. She neglected our drinks... And our order. And since that is her only job i didn't understand why she should have gotten any tip from our check at all. I understand that she splits the tip with the chef.

He should have gotten our whole tip. Carlos was awesome.

Sorry for being opinionated but it was crappy that my husband didn't get his and that we had to ask twice for it....and... our appetizer... We spent $88 on two entrees and 6 pieces of sushi and a glass of plum wine. And crappy service with a forced tip.

“Good food ok service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2012

We had a great time but there were some issues with a payment on a debit card that resulted in the money coming out twice. What a shame the management didn't comp my friend's food vs. telling her to check her bank two days in a row for it to come back. Not impressed by that sevice.

“odd sushi meal - since when do you sear the tuna?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2012

I have been several times with girlfriends, primarily because of the convenient location and the price point is reasonable. This night was odd. We were seated outside, very nice relaxing atmosphere. When presented the winelist we were told it was not current - so, why present it, and how hard is it to print something out nowadays? We ended up tasting a few, which was nice to be accomodated and did find one we liked. We ordered a number of appetizers and a main for each of us. One girlfriend ordered two different sushi dishes with tuna. For both of them the chef addedd a little searing, something none of us had ever seen. When we asked the waiter he said that is just what the Monday night chef does? The rest of the meal was good, consistent to previous experience but not outstanding. Our waiter was very helpful, kept us entertained and was prompt to refill glasses. I believe we will return out of tradition but will certainly ask that our sushi not be cooked next time.

“Lovely atmosphere ... great chefs ... terrific food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012

This has quickly become one of our most favorite restaurants in the Hampton Roads area. If you are in the mood for a really great sushi bar or habachi grill ... this place will never disappoint! It's fabulous! The food is wonderful; the chefs do a great job of preparing the food exactly like you want it - you'll enjoy these experts performing at their best! We always meet really nice people here, too. Take some time and try this place ... you'll love it!

“Best Sushi and Hibachi around!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

Hayashi continues to be my favorite location for consistent, delicious and fresh sushi as well as the most amazing filet mignon on the hibachi grill! The dynamite roll and the spicy kani are amazing! Lenny prides himself in using the freshest fish and meats and it shows. While the pricing is a little on the high side, the portions are very generous! I always leave with enough food for a second meal. Hayashi is also the only Japanese steakhouse I have found that does noodles as well as fried rice with their hibachi! If you want just sushi, their 3/$35 is a great deal! Pick 3 specialty rolls, soup and salad! Enough to share!! Can't say enough good things! I also enjoy their Hampton location. A little more upscale, with only a dining room, no hibachi tables! Nice outdoor patio too!
