“Friendly staff, clean room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2012

Let me tell you, it is not easy to find a hotel that is reasonably priced, allows dogs, and doesn't have a plethora of negative reviews on here. We just needed a place to stay for one night on the way to a family event in VA Beach on a Saturday. After much searching, we reserved a room here. Elva at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. We nearly had a disaster upon arrival as I had called to check the pet policy and been told to indicate in my online reservation that we'd have a dog with us, which I did. Somehow this got missed and we weren't assigned a room that allows pets. Thankfully a "pet room" was available for us, so disaster was averted. So if you plan to stay here with a pet, call and make sure they are aware of this instead of relying on the internet reservations. It was a $50 non-refundable fee for our pet. Anyway, this hotel seems to have two types of buildings - two with indoor hallways and two with doors that open to the outside. We were in one with an exterior door. My only complaint is that it didn't seem to block noise well at all. A group arrived at 4am (they weren't being terribly loud) and I woke up startled as it sounded as if they were right in our room! Perhaps the rooms in the interior hallway buildings are quieter. About the room: it was clean and sufficient, with my only complaints being that the bathroom was tiny (not a huge deal) and the bed was squeaky. Every time I turned over it squeaked loudly. The complimentary breakfast was standard - some hot items, cereals, juice, donuts and breads, etc. Very nice staff replenishing the items and cleaning up as we were there. We didn't make use, but the hotel has a "theater" room and game room with a pool table (I think, I just peeked in quickly) which would have been fun if we were there longer. Bottom line: would definitely stay again if passing through the area. Note for other travelers: this hotel is not in an area that has much in the way of shopping or dining - if you were looking for that, you'd have to drive at least a few miles away - there just seems to be a little local restaurant (maybe bar?) nearby - and a Holiday Inn right next door.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012

My husband and I stayed here over Labor Day weekend. We checked in on Friday night around 9:30 pm after a drive down from Northern Virginia. There was someone checking in already who clearly didn't have a reservation. I understand that the check-in would take longer for this, but during the process the clerk took a phone call and had a lengthy conversation. It was clearly a business call since she was answering questions about the hotel and rate, but since she was in the middle of checking in one guest and had another waiting she should have put the caller on hold as soon as she realized it wasn't a quick question. While checking us in, she took another call which was also long. The whole check-in process took about 25 minutes which was entirely too long. Checking-out took 15 minutes even though there were no other guests checking out and they already had my credit card. All they needed to do was check me out in the computer and print a receipt. Also there was a loud dot matrix printer printing non-stop at the front desk on Sunday morning. It was very annoying. They should invest in a quiet inkjet or move the printer to a back room. At the very least they could put it in a cabinet to mute the noise.

On Saturday, we had breakfast at 8:30 before leaving the hotel for the day. The breakfast was good with scrambled eggs, sausage, sausage gravy and biscuits as well as danish, bagels, bread, cold cereal, juice and fruit. On Sunday, we were planning to sleep late so we weren't happy when the maid was vacuuming in the hall at 8:20 am and we really didn't appreciate a knock on the door at 9:15 am from housekeeping. We had the Do Not Disturb sign on the door and we were checking out that day (11:00 am check-out time). Why would the maid need to knock on the door? Breakfast is served until 10:00 and when we went there at 9:35 they were out of gravy, almost out of eggs and sausage and had no bowls for cereal. They also were out of bagels and had two slices of bread left. A man was told at 9:40 that they were out of bagels and they didn't have more to put out but they did put out more bowls for cereal.

The room was clean and overall staff was friendly, but I think the policies need to change. Check-in and check-out should be faster, housekeeping should not be vacuuming the hall before 10:00 am, the breakfast should remain stocked until 10:00, and no one should knock on the door if the Do Not Disturb sign is posted and especially if it's the day you're going to check out. The bed was comfortable, the room was spacious, however you could hear every noise in the hallway and above you. For a more quiet room you should request second floor (but there isn't an elevator), and one at the end of the hall (stairs are in the middle). However, if you opt for first floor do not ask for end of the hall because that's where the exit door is. Every single door on the first floor including the exit door squeaked.

If we had gotten up both days at or before 8:00 and had breakfast by 8:30 we would have had a better stay since most of our problems were caused by noises in the hall, knocking on the door, and under stocked breakfast after 9:00. The rating probably would have been a four since even though the front desk process was slow, they were friendly. There was a coffee maker, refrigerator and microwave in our room.

As I mentioned, the room was clean and bed comfortable, the breakfast food was good and staff was friendly. The free internet was easy and pretty fast. This hotel is not close to any restaurants that we could find but five miles down I-64 there are a lot of choices. We will stay there next time only if we're planning to be up early each morning. And even in that case we'll ask for a room on the second floor and tell them not to knock if we have Do Not Disturb on the door. (By the way the signs are two-sided and we made sure the make up the room sign was not facing out.)

Room Tip: If you want quiet, ask for second floor at the end of the hall but the hotel does not have an elevat...

My wife and I were here for our daughter's graduation from AIT. The hotel is only 2 minutes from Ft Eustis.

First impression was good. The lobby was clean and there was a movie room (closed while we were there), game room with pool table, and an exercise room.

Our room was a king efficiency. It was clean and had a desk, chair, small loveseat, stove, small refrigerator, coffee maker, hairdryer, iron and ironing board. For me the bed was way too hard but my wife loved it so I guess it depends on what you like. The bathroom was tiny but had enough room to get all your business done. The decor was a little outdated but it didn't bother us at all.

The breakfast consisted of eggs, sausage, sausage gravy, biscuits, doughnuts, milk, orange juice, some other kind of juice that I can't remember, and coffee.

Would stay there again if in the area.

This is truly a family oriented place. The full breakfast offers something for everyone. The pool is the right size, clean and beautiful! The Inn is located out of the way enough to be private, but close enough to the highway to make travel convenient. I highly recommend this Inn!

We spent three nights at The Mulberry Inn in Newport News, Virginia and surprisingly what my husband and I liked the best of this experience was the friendly service given at the front desk. From the moment when the phone call was received for the reservation, the friendly and enthusiastic voice of Lucinda welcomed us. This spirit of hospitality continued at breakfast with Ms. Hazel and ended at checkout with Jim. We left with the feeling that we might be missed! We will definitly come back!

This is conveniently located near Ft. Eustis Army Base. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The grounds and pool were very clean. Nice shaded picnic area. Room was clean. Their is a pool table for the guests to use along with a theater room for watching dvds, a cardio room and weight room. Nice family atmosphere. We stayed three nights as our son is currently stationed at Ft. Eustis. Price is right and breakfast is included. We will be back again.
