My husband and I stayed here over Labor Day weekend. We checked in on Friday night around 9:30 pm after a drive down from Northern Virginia. There was someone checking in already who clearly didn't have a reservation. I understand that the check-in would take longer for this, but during the process the clerk took a phone call and had a lengthy conversation. It was clearly a business call since she was answering questions about the hotel and rate, but since she was in the middle of checking in one guest and had another waiting she should have put the caller on hold as soon as she realized it wasn't a quick question. While checking us in, she took another call which was also long. The whole check-in process took about 25 minutes which was entirely too long. Checking-out took 15 minutes even though there were no other guests checking out and they already had my credit card. All they needed to do was check me out in the computer and print a receipt. Also there was a loud dot matrix printer printing non-stop at the front desk on Sunday morning. It was very annoying. They should invest in a quiet inkjet or move the printer to a back room. At the very least they could put it in a cabinet to mute the noise.
On Saturday, we had breakfast at 8:30 before leaving the hotel for the day. The breakfast was good with scrambled eggs, sausage, sausage gravy and biscuits as well as danish, bagels, bread, cold cereal, juice and fruit. On Sunday, we were planning to sleep late so we weren't happy when the maid was vacuuming in the hall at 8:20 am and we really didn't appreciate a knock on the door at 9:15 am from housekeeping. We had the Do Not Disturb sign on the door and we were checking out that day (11:00 am check-out time). Why would the maid need to knock on the door? Breakfast is served until 10:00 and when we went there at 9:35 they were out of gravy, almost out of eggs and sausage and had no bowls for cereal. They also were out of bagels and had two slices of bread left. A man was told at 9:40 that they were out of bagels and they didn't have more to put out but they did put out more bowls for cereal.
The room was clean and overall staff was friendly, but I think the policies need to change. Check-in and check-out should be faster, housekeeping should not be vacuuming the hall before 10:00 am, the breakfast should remain stocked until 10:00, and no one should knock on the door if the Do Not Disturb sign is posted and especially if it's the day you're going to check out. The bed was comfortable, the room was spacious, however you could hear every noise in the hallway and above you. For a more quiet room you should request second floor (but there isn't an elevator), and one at the end of the hall (stairs are in the middle). However, if you opt for first floor do not ask for end of the hall because that's where the exit door is. Every single door on the first floor including the exit door squeaked.
If we had gotten up both days at or before 8:00 and had breakfast by 8:30 we would have had a better stay since most of our problems were caused by noises in the hall, knocking on the door, and under stocked breakfast after 9:00. The rating probably would have been a four since even though the front desk process was slow, they were friendly. There was a coffee maker, refrigerator and microwave in our room.
As I mentioned, the room was clean and bed comfortable, the breakfast food was good and staff was friendly. The free internet was easy and pretty fast. This hotel is not close to any restaurants that we could find but five miles down I-64 there are a lot of choices. We will stay there next time only if we're planning to be up early each morning. And even in that case we'll ask for a room on the second floor and tell them not to knock if we have Do Not Disturb on the door. (By the way the signs are two-sided and we made sure the make up the room sign was not facing out.)
