My seventy-five year old mother and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Newport News Virginia for three nights starting on Thursday, October 2nd, 2008. When making our reservations online, we requested a room on the top floor, away from the elevator and the Interstate, and we received a room on the fourth floor (of five) near the end of the hall, away from the elevator.
The medium-sized room included two double beds, each with four pillows on them, a clock radio, one office-type chair with a table/desk, a large television with quite a few channels and a remote, and a coffeemaker and an iron/ironing board in the sliding closet. The small kitchen area has a very cold mini-refrigerator, a small microwave, a sink, a two-burner stove top, as well as some utensils, pots, glasses, plates, a drying rack, and some dish soap in the kitchen cabinets.
The tiny bathroom was very hard to get into, as you had to squeeze between the toilet and the bathtub to get the large door closed. The sink area was outside of the bathroom and included three sets of towels, a hairdryer, bottles of shampoo, conditioner and lotion, as well as two bars of soap, a shower cap, and a vanity kit. There were two handles in the shower/tub, which my mother was able to use to get in and out with ease.
The location is very close to Yorktown, Williamsburg, and the Fort Eustis Military Base, but is not close to shopping or more mainstream restaurants. We also found it difficult to get off the property, as the traffic was pretty constant, and a u-turn is needed to head towards Newport News.
After taxes, the American Automobile Association rate per night for Room 428 came to $100.24 U.S. Funds. Overall, we were very comfortable in the room as it was clean, but not as convenient to amenities (shopping/restaurants) as other Holiday Inns in the Hampton Roads area. Still, it met our needs, but be warned, the bathroom is small and will prevent us from making a return visit...
