“Cute rooms, stylish bar but too far from any action”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2011

I had made a reservation at the Altiport for 2 nights over NY's Eve on venere.com, somehow the reservation was not registered with them, which was annoying. They managed to accomodate us for one night, and helped us find another hotel for the second night. To get to the center of Meribel we needed to wait for a bus and the ride took 20 minutes. All restaurants were closed or didnt serve any food, so we had to return to the hotel to get something to eat. The Altiport only served a 5 courses dinner, of which half the dishes I had no interest in. In the end, they were kind enough to prepare two steaks for us which we ate in our room. I can recommend the hotel to those who are only interested in skiing, if you want to go out afterwards you better find a hotel in the town. The most annoying thing was the shower which had no curtain, so you needed to sit in the tub.

Above the hussle and bustle of Meribel Centre lies the altiport, a little air strip right next to the piste. Next to it is the Altiport hotel, recently completely rebuilt in Dec 2010 and sporting a classy bar/lounge area, a pool for the summer, 30m walk to the piste, an amazing view and best of all it gets the last of the sun in the entire valley, is it is high up.

The bus (which is free) goes every 15 mins to after midnight to the Centre. The lunch time food is up end in price (20 euros a main) on its sun-drenched deck next to the piste, but is some of the very best available anywhere in the 3 valleys. The tartiflet i highly recommend.

The evening food goes up a notch - far from cheap at 49 euros a set menu, but it is superb. Some of the course simply blew me away they were so tasty. The wine selection is excellent and the recommendation for wine with the food I had was bang-on target.

The 3 star rating for this hotel really doesn't do it justice. It is more akin to a 4 or 5 star.

Run by a man who is often around should there be a problem, it is a friendly place with a homely feel despite its modern bar - themed loosely around the altiport / aircraft it is next to. Don't worry, the altiport is for private small planes only and there are only a few aircraft movements a day so it is not a bother.

There is also a spa and comprehensive ski shop attached should you need something urgent and not want to head into the centre.

In short, the only criticism really is that they charge 10 euros for wifi access in the lounge area; when one is paying 5 euros for a coffee or tea I think this cheapens the experience. Giving tickets for access makes sense, as you dont want people lingering without a purchase, but then give 90 min access tickets and use the common sense of staff to spot the few who might take advantage. These days, WIFI and internet is a part of everyones life and charging in such a top end establishment seems folly.

The staff to me were particularly helpful however; whether you are skiing past on the piste, visit this place for lunch, come up from Meribel for a treat of a meal or even better, book in and stay here.

This was the only room I could find in a hotel in Meribel, and I'm happy it was. The Altiport Hotel is the highest in Meribel and has a fantastic view of the mountains. It's also right it front of the tiny airport, with just the odd small plane and helicopter skimming in and out occasionally - this is great fun. You felt you were on top of the world.

The hotel is ski in and ski out, and the ski shop in the hotel was very helpful indeed and supplied me with excellent skis. Well done to all the ski shop staff. The Rhodos ski lift takes you just above the hotel all the way from the valley, and it closes very late - 5:30pm - so you can ski real late if you want to.

Breakfast was full of everything you could want (and you can have it delivered to your room if you want). I was only B&B, but the other guests said that the evening meal was wonderful, with a fantastic choice. You can also sit on the sun deck and order drinks. The room was not large, and there was just a bath with a shower attachment - but it was fine. The views over the forest and mountains was beautiful. Importantly, the hotel and room was spotlessly clean. The staff were very helpful, and the room rate was not bad at all considering the location etc.

A big fire was lit each evening, and I sat happily with my hot chocolate. The room had both underfloor heating and a wall heater controlled from reception. I had the wall heater turned off, as it was so hot and the air was so dry at night it was hard to sleep. But once this was off, I slept like a baby. There was also a sauna and Jacuzzi; but you had to book this in 30 minute slots, and I didn't bother.

Slight downsides: The hotel was built in 1978, and could do with a facelift at some point, but then I guess the prices would go up; but it's not tatty, just a tad dated. The hotel does not serve snacks at any point during the day; and this is a pain if you fancy a ham jambon after the slopes, but you can have cake in the afternoon, and there is a bar etc. It is only a 3 star hotel, so there is no-one to help you with your bags from the car park etc.

Also it would have been nice to have a little map and instructions to show you how to reach the boot room and then the slopes etc. But the boot room does have proper boot heaters and lockers. WiFi access was only in the lounge and was 10 Euros for 30 hours, but it worked fine.

I rented a car from Geneva airport and it was just 2 hours and a very easy motorway journey to Meribel. From Meribel it's a good 10 minute drive up the winding roads to the hotel. I made the trip down each night to dine with friends in their chalet, and I'm glad I had a car, as the fare was 24 Euros each way in a taxi! Or you can take the ski bus that runs late. But of course you don't need a car, as the hotel is ski in and out - but you may want to pop into Meribel for a meal one night or visit a bar.

All in all I would say this is a great hotel, and I would stay there again. The only reason to be down in Meribel would be if you wanted to be out each night getting drunk etc. It's main feature is its amazing and unsurpassed location and views - and if you have come all the way to the alps, isn't that what it's all about?

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2009

I reviewed another 3 star hotel recently (the Alpina in Chamonix) which was really very poor and so was a little concerned about what the Altiport would be like. I am pleased to say it was very good. The staff were helpful, friendly and attentive. The hotel itself is situated in a very easy ski in / ski out location. We were booked on a half board deal and the food was very good, although the fondue/raclette evening seemed to be a bit of a rip off.
The hotel was clean, light and comfortable, as were the bedrooms. Unfortunately as seems to be the French way, the rooms were too small to be comfortable, only just enough room to walk around the bed, so no real seating area.
The hotel also boats a sauna/jacuzzi/gym area which was very nice but only opened from 4pm and then had to be booked in advance (presumably to stop loads of people cramming in at once) for an hour at a time. We only bothered once!
Overall though, a very worthwhile booking.

We stayed here for a weekend for my partner's birthday and I have stayed there in past years. I have also used the deck for a sunny lunch on trips that have been based in other accomodations in Meribel.

The staff are very good and the hotel is spotlessly clean. The food is typically French and very acceptable. We are both gluten-intolerant and we took along our own flour which the catering staff made into our own bread. They did this without a blink. Nice touch.

The location is ideal for a learner because it walks straight out onto the easiest piste in the resort. There is a ski shop under the hotel for buying and hiring gear. The small airstrip that is adjacent is interesting to watch the Cessnas come and go.

As an experienced skier I was able to take off on the adjacent high-speed 6 man chair, while she had her first ski lessons within range of me taking good care to make sure she wasn't getting into too much trouble. It's a great location.

We had a weekend where the snow never stopped and by the time I came to dig the car out, I was wishing that I had parked it underground in the hotel car park!

This is a very acceptable hotel and occasionally it bordered on excellence. It also copes with dogs.
