“Pleasant Hotel, Good Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2012

Le Saint Martin is well situated within walking distance of everything in the lovely town of Sancerre, which itself is a splendid base for area wine and cheese country exploration. The front desk staff is courteous and helpful: they made dinner reservations for us at a charming restaurant when our desired one was closed. Our "superior" room was small but adequate and very clean; the bathroom new and efficient. Wifi worked on our little notebook.
Breakfast was generous and okay. The hotel hosted a cheery group of English wine tourists and several native French people during our two-day stay. The only negative was the lingering odor of the seagrass carpeting that permeates the hall and room.

This is a pleasant, clean, well appointed hotel situated very conveniently for a visit to this lovely area. It definitely has the feel of a hotel chain with a breakfast to match, but the service was friendly and efficient. It would be advisable to have a room off the road as we were woken during the night by rubbish collection which seemed to last quite a time.

Room Tip: As above, try to be at the back away from the road.

The Internet did not work on either our Android or iPhone for over 3 days so I'm guessing wifi just doesn't work here. The girl at reception was helpful, we could use wifi at the Panoramic hotel, but this was a poor substitute.
We could also use the pool at the Panoramic and that was a nice bonus.
I expect better toiletries at this price level but the room was lovely, bright and airy and the hotel terrifically located in the centre of town.

This was an overnight stop on our return north to England, with the purpose of buying lots of fabulous Sancerre wine. The hotel was in a great location just off the central square. Rooms are basic but perfectly adequate. Shower was great. My one complaint would be the carpet - some sort of sea grass which was not comfortable and quite honestly smelt slightly odd (you could smell it when you got into bed). Another of our party however had paid for a slightly bigger room and somehow were provided with a disabled room with no fixed shower - only a seat and hand held shower. This was not what was expected and disappointing. Overall, staff were extremely polite and helpful. Hotel is a little charmless and breakfast is typically basic.

Le Clos Saint Martin provides a decent, comfortable room for sleeping which is located near most of the restaurants and for entertainment has a view of wine making out the front windows. The room is of a decent size for two people with luggage. The bathroom was a little on the small side, but the shower was excellent for a small bathroom. The decor is simple, white with red accents. The carpet (tan colored) is made from some form of woven grass and gives off an herbaceous smell that is particularly strong in the hall outside the room. The only real drawback for us was that there were down (or down substitute) comforters on the bed and no blankets which made the sleep too hot for us. For fans of coziness, this arrangement must suit, as we found it everywhere we stayed in France. The breakfast, which is extra, was a good small buffet with the normal French breakfast plus cereal, yoghurt, cheese, ham, etc. There were many bakeries in town if something else was desired. We particularly liked this hotel because it was in the center of town, just block from the main square of town where most all the restaurants were located. Other "in town" hotels were on the lower side of town with views but long hikes to town. The hotel had available public parking right in front of it as well as one block away in a square by the post office and near the Tourist Office. We liked the location and took advantage of the hotels with views by having a drink in the bar as we walked around town prior to dinner. Note the hotel is 1 block from Restaurant La Tour, a really nice restaurant!

Arrived in sancerre on a cold and windy afternoon. Sancerre is an old medieval town which looks like it is decaying despite housing a major wine producing region. The hotel was very clean and the room was excellent. A great bed with good duvet and covers. The service was fine, but I left without a particular impression of charm or soul.
