“A Quirky Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2012

We were surprised by this museum---expecting it to only house Civil War items. It was an eclectic collection including American Indian, WW I, WW II, Vietnam War, and movie items. The collection is privately owned and apparently not juried. We enjoyed the museum---a very different experience than most museums.

“Incorrect Photograph”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012 via mobile

This image is of the Bloody Cedars section of the New Market Battlefield Park and Virginia Museum of the Civil War, which is owned by the Virginia Military Institute. This is different from the privately owned military museum with white columns approximately one mile to the south.

“This is an interesting view of our American Heritage.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2012

Not much civil about the civil war, and this battlefield museum can bring home the horror of what our nation went through to become the America we love.

“Ditto on being duped”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2011

Like so many others my wife and I were duped by the signage and realized after we had paid that the battlefield was farther up the road. We did find some of the exhibits interesting BUT it was not where we had intended to visit. It is shameful that they are allowed to post such misleading signage. Obviously we are not the only ones who have been fooled.

“Sneaky, very sneaky!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2011

We inadvertently visited this museum, thinking we were visiting The New Market Battle State Park. The signs are very misleading, telling you to stop at this museum to get tickets...We asked about the movie that was mentioned in the AAA booklet and were told that we shouldn't believe AAA. We paid our money and went through the museum. As we were touring through the place, we thought it was strange that we were not seeing much about the actual Civil War battle that took place in New Market. We did see Native American displays, weapons, and lots of info about movies featuring old time movie stars like Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, etc. and lots of other things from that time period. It was not a terrible museum, not the greatest either, but the method of getting visitors really turned us off. The Shenandoah Valley is a rural spot and since we were there for a week, this museum was something to do. I would not recommend it to a tourist with children, or to someone with limited time. If it is raining and you are really hard-up for entertainment, it is better than looking at fog and rain from the Skyline Drive!
