Owner description: Marqueyssac is one of the most beautiful romantic gardens of France and today the most visited garden in Perigord. Listed as a national historical monument thanks to its 54 acres park, Marqueyssac's gardens offer more than 6 kilometres of shaded paths in a maze of 150 000 hand-pruned boxwoods. From the belvedere, at 130 meters above the Dordogne river, you will see the most spectacular panorama in Perigord. This is the testimony of a rich bygone history and a gorgeous natural heritage. It's also an exceptionnal Dordogne valley point of view, you will see its most beautiful villages : Domme, Castelnaud, Beynac, Fayrac, La Roque-Gageac and its castles.

Beautiful gardens and scenery. Something for all the family, with a playgorund and tearoom/restaurant.

Totally unique gardens in an amazing clifftop setting with excellent facilities. The topisry is like no other we have seen and there are a variety of walks to be enjoyed with fantastic views over the local countryside.

“a must-see and must-experince part of a Dordogne trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

This garden is on the top of ridge and has the best viewpoints in the whole of the Dordogne region. We went in mid-September and the crowds were thinning. The tearoom has an excellent terrace (with peacocks). There are three Walks along the garden and we walked along the Cliff Walk first and enjoyed the lookouts, especially the 'Belvedere' which we did not know was going to be a lookout but turned out to have the best views in the Dordogne. Then we walked the short distance to the Poets Hut at the far end of the property. Inside the hut is a poem in French that I knew just enough French to realise was about the spiritual effects of a garden like this one - great. (By the way, all the many signs throughout the Walks are only in French, which is a pity.) The we walked back along the level Grand Walk to the entrance although we could have caught the small shuttle that runs along the Grand Walk. All in all, we were most impressed with the whole experience and it turned out to be a core part of our Dodogne trip. I had not fully understood how much the formality of Continental gardens (compared with the relative 'wildness' of English gardens) actually show a deep love and appreciation of gardens.

“A marvelous garden to wander in for hours.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2012

Delightful overlooks across the valley and river below. Interesting layout. Woods as well as sculpted gardens. Not much to see in the Chateau, but it gives a flavor of the lives of the inhabitants.
