“A charming place to stay in Dordogne”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2011

Staying at Lys de Castelnaud was such a happy experience for us. We had come to the Dordogne region to visit the prehistoric caves, enjoy the regional produce and pates, and see the picturesque towns along the Dordogne and Vezere Rivers. We read about Le Lys de Castelnaud online, and were very pleased with our 5-day stay there.

Nathalie and Dominique were very welcoming, gave us excellent recommendations to local restaurants, and helped us plan our daily excursions. They also suggested visits to towns and sites we would have missed had we been on our own.

I can't say enough about the pleasant and delicious breakfasts of home made jams and preserves and fresh breads, shared with other guests who were interesting to talk with. We feel very fortunate to have found such a clean, comfortable, quiet, well-located chambre d'hôte, and we think of our young enthusiastic hosts as the key to enjoying our trip to Dordogne.

My wife, son and I stayed here for two nights while exploring the Dordogne region. This small inn is situated perfectly, between two charming tiny towns and directly across the river from one of the best castles on the Dordogne River--Chateau de Castelnaud, which you MUST tour!

The owner, Nathalie, who hails from Normandy, is as charming as can be. She speaks very good English--although she will insist she does not--and is quite well versed in the the Middle Ages, and in particular Joan of Arc. (She did not raise it, but I knew about her interest and insisted she talk to me about it.) Her inn is full of all manner of Medieval decorations--armor, tapestries, etc.

The inn sits on a nice piece of property on a hillside, far enough from the road to be peaceful. The front porch has a striking view of the river. The inn is not modern, and the only negative thing I can say is that it is a bit dark inside because of the heavy Medieval decorations and relatively small windows. But both our room--and my son's--faced the Castle and the river. There it was, lit up and shining at night. The bathroom--which we only shared with our son--was down the hall a few feet, but this was no problem. And the bathroom itself was very spacious and nicely appointed, unlike what you often get in big cities like Paris.

Breakfast was very good, served in the dining room by Nathalie, who lights up a room when she walks in with her bright personality--and very spiffy clothes. (I think stylish Nathalie changed outfits a couple times a day, always looking perfectly put together as she buzzed around the inn. There is "something" about French women!) She had good tips for us on what to do, from canoeing the river (another "must") and visiting the cave paintings in the vicinity. And her dining tips in the evening were excellent--we had a couple of our best meals in France in the small towns along the Dordogne River.

When it came time to leave, I felt like I had known Nathalie for a long time, and vowed to come back to the Dordogne and to her inn. There is much to see and do in this region, and we did not do it justice. And I want to hear more about Joan of Arc....

We stayed 3 nights in the gite (there are also several chambres d'hotes) and had a lovely time. The rooms were spacious and private, and the kitchen was well equipped. I cooked all of our meals except for breakfast, which we shared with the other guests upstairs in the "main house." We even had our own terrace with table and chairs and private parking. Nathalie and Dominique are welcoming and charming. Nathalie is a real "character" who delights in role-playing medieval days. She also likes to practice her English language skills with guests. This place is in walking distance of the river and Castelnaud castle and the Marqueyssac gardens. Beynac and La Roque Gageac are a short drive away. The weather was perfect while we were there, so that may have colored our impressions, but I can honestly say it was a very good choice for our trip.

We loved our time in the Dordogne and Nathalie's bed and breakast was one of the highlights of our trip. She is a delightful person and really tries to make everyone comfortable and happy. She succeeds admirably and we recommend that you stay with her if you want a great experience in a great location to see all that the Dordogne has to offer. Nathalie has great recommendations on sights to see and places to eat. She will gladly make dinner reservations for you and was successful in getting the restaurant to give us some nice extras at no extra charge.

We spent a magical and most comfortable 5 nights at Le Lys de Castelnaud, wishing all the while we had more time but will definitely return. A marvelous location, exquisite views, modern facilities.
Natives of Brittany and world travelers, Nathalie & Dominique Charbonnier extend the warmest of welcomes & delight in sharing with guests the culture and history of their adopted region. Immediately one has the feeling of being at home, relaxed and with old friends. She helped us with dinner reservations and all her suggestions were wonderful. At the communal breakfast table Nathalie translates, if need be, so guests may share their suggestions for touring the Perigord. Nathalie’s superb command of English extends to playful speech as well lending a light hearted spirit to this truly lovely medieval themed B & B. The furnishings suggest they were collected with a deep love of the medieval period; each piece, large or small, whether wooden chest, detail of armor, bedspread or iron candlestick is placed to create a refined castle décor

We stayed 4 nights at this bed/ breakfast near Castelnaud, Beynac, La Roque Gageac and Sarlat. Great location if have a car. Hostess Nathalie very enthusiastic, speaks English well, and helped with obtaining canoe and bicycle rentals. Guest access to refrigerator and even a terrace for picnics. Our room had king size bed with private bathroom but outside the room. There was excellent view to castle which was lit at night. Another unit with kitchenette. Breakfast included in price.

Le Lys de Castelnaud is an excellent base for visiting many of the most interesting and attractive towns and villages in the Dordogne. The website provides an accurate portrayal of the accommodation, particularly the YouTube video. The rooms, if a little on the small size, are decorated precisely as described, and the owner exhibits an enormous enthusiasm for the medieval period. I have only a two small criticisms which affected us. Firstly, the plug to the wash basin did not work and so you could only wash by using running water. This is actually more inconvenient than you might at first imagine. Secondly, though the breakfast was typical of what one usually gets in France, (i.e. nothing particularly special, just coffee, bread and jam, and cake), the bread, though absolutely fresh, had such hard crust than we were concerned that we might break a tooth.

Two further points of warning. Firstly, in terms of arrival time, the owner of the house is absent during the afternoon and does not return till 6.0 p.m., so there's no point in turning up before then, whether on spec or having pre-booked. Secondly, don't expect to be able to have an early breakfast. 9.0 a.m. was the owner's preferred time.
