“Small but beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

Domme itself is a lovely village, with a market on a Thursday in the square right outside this hotel. The hotel is perched on a bluff with amazing views over the Dordogne river. THe room was small but nicely decorated. Bathroom was very small. The service was excellent - very helpful with offers of drying clothes if wet from the rain we had walked through. I can highly recommend the restaurant: the chef is a star and the service impeccable.

My 12 year old daughter and I so enjoyed our 2-night stay at L'Esplande in Domme France, more than I can capture in this review. From our 3rd floor walk-up room, the view of the Dordogne valley below was absolutely stunning. The owner was welcoming, sincere and capable. The town of Domme is special and deserved more time to appreciate. The stuffed chicken dish I had at dinner rivaled any preparation I've had at high-end, highly rated restaurants. The bathroom and shower (with view) made my daughter say she wished we could live there. Although the positives strongly outweigh any negatives, to be balanced in the review, carpeting in the hallway are frayed (but given the Middle Ages, French charm presented no concerns to us). but might be noticed by others. Air conditioning on a warm day was delightful. Wi-fi was spotty and quirky system with user unfriendly log-on. We will always remember the special stay we had at L'Esplanade and hope to return.

Room Tip: Not sure if all rooms share the same view of the valley below, but that is essential to really appre...

My wife and I stayed here for three nights. The room was nice, the girls at the front desk were nice and very helpful with places to go and how to get there. We would highly recommend the hotel to anyone. Oh, the view of the valley was amazing!

The day we arrived in sarlat it was raining so decided to stay in domme as read it was very picturesque and quiet. We were very pleased,we got the last room (at the back) but it was quiet, clean and bathroom modern. We stayed two nights, had dinner both nights and wished we could have stayed longer. Staff was excellent in all areas of the hotel. They did our washing for us (as we are away for 6 months) and reception told us they do not charge but would be nice if we tipped the housekeepers. Unbelievable these days to find this in France. Food and wine selection was exceptional at dinner. Beds ere very comfortable and no noise from other guests. Domme is a beautiful village and easy to visit Sarlat and surrounding areas then come back to the quiet of the village. Will definitely stay again.

When reading hotel reviews, statisticians might say one should leave out the most critical and the most flattering to get a true picture! Certainly the Esplanade did not, for us, deserve one dire previous criticism of the staff; they were, without exception, very helpful and charming. Whether from a trainee waitress or more experienced ones or from the manageress/owner and her mother (who had worked in the hotel for 38 years), we received only help and politeness.

The view of the river from our room, chambre 1, was spectacular. The hotel is not a newly sanitised place but one of older grace. Our room was a little small by modern standards but comfortable and well equipped. It would be nice to have a wider choice of TV channels, not that we needed TV! WiFi is free and worked after we reminded them to switch on the guests’ router!

Dinner was elaborate but a little slow. This was because they had a ‘full house’ including a party of 26; they had been turning people away because every table was taken (a good sign). Our waitress was understanding and apologetic about it. There is a type of upmarket French cooking which, to our taste, is almost more about style than substance. The intricate dishes and ‘amuse bouche’ were light and enjoyable.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay very much and loved the surrounding spots such as Les Milandes, where Josephine Baker had lived, and the contrasting gardens of Cadiot and Eyrignac. Domme itself is pretty if touristy and along the Dordogne, as many know, there are spectacular castles, grottos and cliffs. We had to bypass Sarlat which had come to a traffic and parking halt during two bank holidays.

Room Tip: rooms facing north have the view

Domme is an absolute gem and Hotel l'Esplanade is simply stunning. If you're offered a room with a view over the river ... take it. The hotel is family owned and family run, Madame is very attentive and she speaks good English. We took dinner in the restaurant, it was excellent and the staff were very attentive. Domme can get very busy during the summer so you'd be well advised to book ahead. Your only problem might be parking. There is Pay and Display parking at the top of the town close to the hotel and if you find a parking place there ... grab it. Otherwise just drive round again, slowly! I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay, and I'm sure we'll be going back.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view over the river.

We were touring from Barcelona to the Black forest so we booked one night in Domme. We got lost and we were supposed to get there by 4pm, we end up getting there after 8pm and our host was waiting for us!
Getting into town was lovely, but finding out where we were going to sleep was even better. The place was lovely, charming decor, comfortable bed - the treat came the morning after when we went downstairs to have breakfast, what a view!
I didn't want to go! But we had to keep going...
This is few of the places I do remember vividly from our 3 week-trip. If we get the chance to go back, I won't doubt going to L'Esplanade again and stay longer!
