“Simply Perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

This is our second visit to Gruner Baum. To say the visit was perfect, would be an understatement. The location is outstanding. The hiking is breath taking. The staff is outstanding. They are courteous, helpful, and kind. The facility is perfectly clean. The room views are unobstructed right into the valley - mountain tops, streams, manicured gardens, and more. The food was timely and delicious and the wait staff extremely attentive. We were given a great choice for wine which was both good and well priced. We will be coming back as often as we can.

Room Tip: Choice a room with a view into the valley

The hotel Grüner Baum is one of those places you’d never, ever find if you didn’t know it existed. And that is where its charm lies. Tucked away at the beginning of a mountain valley, you’ll twist and turn for a few kilometers before reaching your goal. The Grüner Baum is a hotel village with various buildings housing not only the bedrooms themselves, but also a spa and inside pool area as well as a petting zoo. There is a brook which divides the property in two, and steep mountains on both sides.

We had room 30 and wouldn’t necessarily recommend it. The fittings were older however in good repair. There was a small balcony. Although spacious enough, it was dark and the double bed was creaky on one side. If you are sensitive to noise, be aware that the flowing stream might be a bit loud. We also noticed a low-level ventilator noise which perhaps came from the kitchen.

The common areas are rather old and thus not particularly inviting to lounge about in. The personnel in both the restaurant and reception however were very friendly and helpful. As we only stayed for one night, it is probably not fair to judge the food; our dinner was only average. Breakfast was fine with the usual selection of freshly cooked eggs, bread, etc. Unfortunately, both the restaurant and our room had quite a lot of flies. It’s probably difficult to keep them out during the summer when the doors and windows are open; nevertheless they were quite distracting while eating. We were also surprised at the number of children – probably because the hotel is in a safe location, parents feel comfortable taking their kids with.

The outside pool is attractive however as it was hot on our arrival day, it was also filled with adults and children rightfully enjoying themselves. That evening there was a pool party; as we had had a long and tiring drive to get to the hotel, our only interest was getting a good nights’ sleep. The bass from the music was a bit too loud.

A highlight of the stay was renting Segways and cruising up the hiking path. Although expensive, we had fun learning how to balance on the machines and thoroughly enjoyed the mountain scenery. Also worthy on mention was the Jauserstation restaurant not too far from the hotel; they offer a staggering number of different strudels along with cheese, sausage, bread, fish, and soups. It’s worth making the short walk up to this mountain restaurant.

We appreciated the opportunity for a late checkout, and must also mention that there is free internet connection in the rooms.

In conclusion we would recommend the Grüner Baum for families who want a secluded vacation spot away from the masses, as there are many attractions which cater to children.

Dear Jackson!

Thank you so much for taking your time writing this very detailed review.
You are absolutely right; our biggest asset is the location. It is a little disappointing, that you only rated 3 points, as I assume that you enjoyed your stay.
Room 30 is in the main building, which was built 80 years ago. We will never renovate that. There is old, traditional furniture in the rooms and we put a lot of effort to keep it that way. The sound of the river is as it is. Regarding the sound of the ventilation system, we are thankful for all the guest comments. There is a problem with the cooling system which causes that noise, we are sure to fix that in the next weeks.
When travelling in July, which is in the holiday season, it is pretty common to have a lot of families with children. If you prefer quieter surroundings I would recommend you traveling in September & October as most children are back in school. The pool party you mention was only on the 20th July and we are sorry that it disturbed you.
We are happy that in general you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again for a longer stay.
All the best
Maximilian Blumschein.

We have been here several times in 2005, 2006, 2009. Perfect location, outstanding service from the highly professional staff. I would recommend this hotel to everyone who seeks for a pure drinking water, cristal clear air, calmness and relaxation in the Austrian Alps. The Blumschein family will make everything for you to have one of the most memorable vacation. Near is the developed infrastucture of the Bad Gastein for those who want to have more active way of the holiday.

Stayed in August 2013 and had a wonderful time. Lots of great things to do in and around the hotel. Food excellent and plenty of choice with half board. Hotel has been run by the same family for 100 years and they are very much in evidence in the running of all aspects of the hotel. Their experience certainly shows from the moment you arrive (relaxed welcome with refreshing drinks) to the minute you leave. All the staff seem very happy and go out of their way to help you have the most relaxed holiday you can imagine. We were impressed by the range of generations that stay in the hotel from young families to more mature pensioners! All seemed to fit in and make the place a truly friendly hotel which is like staying with an extended family. Would give it six stars if allowed.

My great-grandmother had the possibility of buying 50 % of a thermal spring in thhe year 1928. Since that time do we have our own thermal water, which we use for the pools as well.
Hope to see you soon.

We had a wonderful week of skiing. The hotel is beautifully located in a calm valley outside of the village. Distance to town center and lift was no problem due to free shuttle service. Half board gets you a great breakfast buffet and superb evening dinners. The pool are is excellent for relaxing after a day in the slopes.

We stayed at the hotel in June 2013, during a week of sunshine and warm weather which added to the overall experience. The setting is just picture-book perfect. The grounds are very well maintained, we really enjoyed the pool area. The staff is very friendly, I am sure they enjoy working at this hotel, and it reflects quite positively in their interaction with the guests. The food is very good, and in view of the fine weather we were able to have our meals on the outside terrace. Good possibilities for outdoor activities, hiking uphill or on fairly flat terrain. Overall, a very well run family hotel, and we certainly can recommend it highly (the hotel was recommended to us by friends).

Room Tip: We had a large room in the separate building which also accommodates the spa facilities. Room lookin...
