“Wonderful hotel in a great area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

This is, essentially, a great budget hotel. We got the Rick Steves rate when we booked at the hotel, which was very affordable. We had a nice sized room with it's own, mostly private balcony. The room was clean. I can't stress the importance of cleanliness. I really like my hotel rooms to be clean. The room had a nice bed and typical German pillows, which are much softer than typical American style pillows. The bathroom was a little small but OK. The hotel has a rustic feel and there were a couple of quirks to navigating your way around the hotel. If you're looking for a modern, updated hotel, this isn't really it.

The key plusses of the hotel are the the staff, the food, and the location. Actually, we only stayed a night but this would be a great place to stay longer. They have musical instruments around the hotel and plenty of places to sit around. They have a table tennis set up and they have play rooms for kids inside and play equipment outside as well (they have a trampoline). This hotel would probably suit just about any kind of budget conscious traveller. As well, they did our a full load of our laundry for €6, at that point it was a life saver. This leads right into the best thing about the hotel which is the exceptionally helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable staff. They will help you make the most of your stay.

Aside from the comfort of the hotel itself, it's in a great location. It's a good jumping off point for exploring Austria, Bavaria in general, and especially the King Ludwig castles of Bavaria, and Zugspitze. But, it's right outside of Ruette, a quaint little town with many conveniences, and near the Ehrenburg ruins.

Finally, the food was really good. Breakfast, which I believe was included, gave you a lot of choices for foods that were all very good. We had dinner in the restaurant. This was quite a departure from the rest of the hotel. While the excellent quality of the food was not a surprise, the bright and modern decor of the restaurant was a pleasant surprise. My wife and I suspect that this is a popular local restaurant as well.

This hotel is featured in Rick Steves' Germany book and for good reason. It is a 4 of 5 quality hotel with 5 of 5 quality service. I would strongly recommend considering this hotel if you're staying in this area. I would guess that this is the best place to stay if you have kids and anyone who gave this 5 stars is probably being more fair than I am.

We had such a nice stay here, our host Gabi couldn't be more helpful! She gave us many options of interesting activities and things to see in the area. Its a family run hotel and they make you feel right at home. The restaurant is fantastic! The beef goulasch was great and make sure you leave room for the kaiser schmarrn which is AMAZING!

We love Hotel Maximilian: not only a clean, comfortable, quiet room with great breakfast and excellent dinner, but wonderful recommendations for best way to enjoy local sights and activities. Plus they do laundry! We rented bikes and biked up the Lech Valley, beautiful turquoise river and a choice of paved biked trails on BOTH sides of the river. Reutte is centrally located but without the crowds and shopping emphasis of Füssen or Garmisch. We had cows scamper across the parking lot in the mornings, we were right ON a 30+km bike trail, but were only 10 minutes from Füssen and not far from Zugspitz.

This small run family hotel is located at the mountains along the Austrian/German border and about 30 minutes from Neuschwanstein. The staff goes out of their way to be helpful. I think the entire family of many siblings and offspring work here. We arrived at the train station and could not find a taxi - Reutte is a very small town - so a quick call to the hotel and at no charge they picked all 7 of us up in 5 minutes. Whatever we needed, Gabi and the rest of her family went out of their way. The hotel is a ways our of town so a car would be helpful. They have a restaurant with great food onsite and breakfast is included with the room. We rented their old minivan, manual drive, for 1 Euro a km which included gas and insurance, to visit Neuschwanstein and the castle ruins outside of town. It would have been hard to get around without this. The only thing keeping this from being a 5 star review is the actual hotel room. The beds were comfortable but like most smaller hotels in Europe there was no AC and the bathroom really only worked if you were 2 feet tall. It had a sloped ceiling and the only way to shower was to crouch in the tub and use a handheld shower nozzle and try to avoid getting the whole bathroom soaked. But for one or two nights, the view, location, and service made up for this. While we were there a Rick Steve's tour checked in which raised the American percentage but before that most of our fellow guests were European. Overall it is a great place for one or two nights in a beautiful natural setting.

Room Tip: Avoid top floor rooms because of the slope in the bathroom.

We had a lovely stay at hotel maximilian. The restaurant was fantastic and the rooms were very comfortable, but the staff was what really made our experience wonderful. They were outgoing, hardworking and helpful. They gave us great ideas about what to see and where to walk as well finding us a local doctor to see. The hotel was clearly a true family business and we could not have felt more at home.
