“bearded monkey was decent for a night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

Nothing great here but not terrible either.. no bar, restaurant, etc.. but you can bring your own and they do have a kitchen you can use. I heard many stories of bed bugs after we stayed there but there were 4 in our group and no one had any issues. Staff seemed friendly enough, for long stays there are better options but this is a decent cheap place to stay for a night.

Needless to add words. Stay away from this place. We came after lonely planet recommended it and I really consider to throw away this book now. The place is cheap and looks nice. The staff is nice. But after half an hour in the bed we discovered the horror of this hotel - we turned on the lights and ticks were crawling all over it. Apparently the people that run this hostel know about this and don´t do anything about it. To my opinion it´s better to sleep on the street hugging a local homeless.

I was here during the poetry festival, so there was not alot of choice. this place was fine, the only issue is the thin mattresses as others have mentioned. I had my camp gear with me so I got by. it is safe. I went to a much more interesting place that is not listed onlonley planet or here after and much enjoyed that much better. the price here is reasonable for what you get.

place is a dump riddled with bed-bugs. do not pay in advance - you will not get it back. staff does not speak English.

Room Tip: find another place to stay - i.e. La Libertad and La Casita are next door.

In general its nod too bad hostel - rooms are spasious, there are big lockers next to each bed, price is OK, As well there is internet connection and hammocks. Thats it.
Kitchen area stinks, fridges should be checked more often for wasted food.
Matresses are super thin, need to be changed.
No bar, just expensive cans of beer, which you can buy during the day.

We stayed at the Bearded Monkey because it was cheap and convenient. While its not the most luxurious, there's computers, Internet and free coffee in the mornings. They have just put together a basic kitchen out the back for all to use which is good. The showers have pressure and the bathrooms are clean. The matresses are thin but bearable and the staff were always helpful and friendly. You really can't complain about a place that is $5 a night.
However, the location of the hostel seems to be on semi dangerous turf in the evenings. With 2 other hostels on the same street, the feeling was that the locals were waiting for drunk tourists to stumble home and the pounced. We were mugged at knife point about 5 meters from the front door. Another girl in the hostel was also attacked with guys treating to beat her with coconuts. The following night I witnessed an extremely violent and bloody fight between locals, again directly out the front of the hostel.
While we all know the cardinal rule, come home in a Taxi it's very easy to get comfortable and think your ok to walk the 2 blocks. Well not in this area. I highly suggest anyone coming home at night to this hostel... Take a taxi. It's not worth the risk.

Room Tip: Rooms towards the back are closer to the bathrooms.

First, went there in Nov. 2007 and the place was ROCKIN!!!!
Returned June of 2011 and it was just ok. Did not have the cool cohesive feel, the bar was closed up and the lights were intermittent. The price is right ,however there are better options now in Granada. The Bearded Monkey was cutting edge at one time, but just so-so now
