“meet the locals”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

surrounded by the chaotic, Noisy and fascinating market, Pali and bus station, this place provides very small room but the commune area with its hammacks is very enjoyable and so is the commune kitchen and the ping pong table. the old couple that runs the place is strict (no monkey business around), and so we felt safe and they are quite accomodating. not too expensive, with WIFI

This hotel is located on the end of the market street so it can be a little difficult to get to and from it when you need to as there is a lot going on in the street during the daytime. The rooms are nice and spacious, we paid for a double room with air conditioning at what we thought was $28 but when it came to paying they said it was $38, we were sure that the guy had said $28 but they would hear none of it. We agreed to not use the air conditioning for the last night and pay only $18 for the fan. The bed was clean and comfortable and there was a walled in toilet and shower on one side of the room. There was a screen door so you could keep the door open and let some air in but not the bugs. The owners are a retired Nicaraguan couple and they just sit around all day, they seemed friendly but I think that was just a face for the customers, there was some underlying tension that i could feel. The lady speaks a bit of English, but only when she is in a good mood, if you annoy her there will be no more English for you!!

I have been coming back to El Esphinge for 6 years. It is clean, it is quiet, the ceilings are at least 20ft high. Every bed gets its own fan. There is a kitchen, no fridge, but the Pali grocery store is right next door, so its easy to just shop as you need it. Great area to do your laundry. It isnt terribly busy, but there are other people around. $7/person per night. The owners are a respectable old couple, they are cool, but I wouldn't check in if you want to raise a ruckus.

Room Tip: Dont bother with the private bath rooms. The shared bath quarters are much more charming and there...

Esfinge's location is good, as it's only a few blocks from Granada's bus terminal, and a 5 minute walk to the main square. It's in a much less touristy part of town, across from the town market, which can be very hectic during the day. The street is very crowded, but the hotel is very quiet and not very busy. There are relaxing rocking chairs in the lobby which look out on the street through the large windows. It's right next door to a modern supermarket.

Esfinge was not expensive for a room with a fan and bathroom. The room was basic, and was not cleaned during our stay. I'm not sure how well the older couple who own the hotel speak languages other than Spanish.

I stayed here twice whilst in Granada. It is a very cheap option with a private room for $10 or $16 with bathroom. There are rooms in the main part of the house and some set around a communal outdoor area- I prefered the ones set in the outdoors and the en-suite ones are nicer. The hostel has a kitchen however there is no fridge but the market is right opposite to buy fresh veg for dinner, and eating out is cheap in Granada.
We spent a couple of evenings sitting out at the front of the hostel in rocking chairs watching the market goers which is a good people-watching spot.
Best probably for couples as it never seems to be very busy so lone travellers might feel a bit secluded.
