My wife and I stayed here for two weeks in early June. We are back again eight days. This is the seven. We were very pleased with the hotel last time, and it is just as good. We have stayed at the top hotels in town and this is our favorite. The price is also very reasonable.
Hotel Colonial is 50 feet from the main square. You can walk to almost everything. The rooms are spacious and quiet. The bed is comfortable, air-conditioning works fine, breakfast is excellent and the staff is great. There is also a bar and small swimming pool. The price is very reasonable and they have low season specials on their website. Both times, we have been here in the rainy season which is just fine for us. It rains for an hour or so and then is clear and cooler.
We give Granada and Hotel Colonial our highest recommendation. My wife and I are very experienced travelers all over the world. Granada is one of our favorite places. It is just touristy enough. This means that there are enough tourists so that there are good restaurants and hotels, but not so many that they overwhelm the local flavor.
A friend joined us for two nights and loved Granada and the hotel. When you get to town, take the horse carriage ride to get an orientation, and then take a one-hour tour of the small islands near town in Lake Nicaragua. With this orientation there are plenty of other things to do. We like to hire guides because they tell us the stories behind the sites which is very useful. They are not expensive here.
I have business in Nicaragua and have a driver take me to Managua everyday which is about one hour away. My wife stays in Granada. She is taking Spanish lessons and has explored most of the city. Managua is not very interesting, but Granada is great.
