Lovely relaxing oasis in Koh Chang. Great value for money too. Only reason that not 5 stars is because my room was not cleaned on a couple of occassions

For the money you pay to stay at this place, in my opinion it is not worth it. We arrived through the gate and thought immediately, wow, this is great, a raised restaurant/bar with a great quality pool table etc. Then a few things went awry...

We mentioned to the owner Mause that we were vegetarian. he laughed and said, "Well that's bad luck, I don't do vegetarian". That was a bad start.

Then we actually ate at the restaurant which was a mistake. If you can get past the Thai staff who are incredibly unfriendly, If you can get their attention whilst they continuously ignore you . If you can communicate with them despite the fact that their English is practically non-existent. If you are fotunate enough to get to the point where you can actually order the food then good luck in getting what you ordered... 5 times out of 6 they messed up our order. Even with things as simple as drinks. For example my friend ordered a Black Russian (which was on the menu) and got Johnny walker Black with Coke....When he tried to explain what had happened they didn't get it and we gave up in the end. Simple answer if you stay here don't eat at the restaurant.

We didn't really use the pool whilst we were here as it looked really dirty.

On the plus side, the accomodation was good, with an ok bathroom, TV etc......

Whilst the owner Mause seems like an ok guy, he can be really a bit dismissive in some ways and that is quite off putting.
So Mause, come on, you could have a great resort if you get a few minor things sorted out....such as not telling your high paying customers 'BadLuck'!

If you are not going to eat at the restaurant, this place is ok, but for the money you pay....I think you could do a lot better....

Note on Kai Bae Beach in general: We stayed here over Xmas and New Year and found it to be a little cocktail bar and pop music for our taste. Just round the corner is Lonely Beach so if you are looking for something a little less commercial I suggest you try that first..

NOte: Down the street leading to the beach, near the Garden Resort/7-11 there is an Italian restaurant run by a lovely Italian guy. We suggest that you eat there, he is lovely, has great wine and makes outstanding Pizza... Also the best place we ate vegetarian food was ironically the Steak House... everything else apart from these two were pretty average....

Cheers

"I'll be back" is a frequent pledge of TripAdvisor reviewers when they are impressed by a particular resort.
But how many of them actually keep their promise, well-intended though it may be?
Not many, I suspect.
However, I am one of the few who "did go back".
I have just returned from Garden Resort, Kai Bae, Koh Chang, and I am happy to report that none of the appeal has worn off second time around.
It is still the peaceful escape from reality I remember so fondly.
First impressions of Garden Resort customers will probably be a cheery "this will do nicely", and the initial positive judgement will be reinforced as you slide into the no-rush routine.
Garden Resort has occupied Number One spot on TripAdvisor ratings for Koh Chang on many occasions. Recently it has slipped down to third place out of 68 resorts on the island.
But Mause, the Dutch owner, welcomes this slight drop down the table, believing that some guests might expect five-star opulence at three-star prices.
Garden Resort doesn't do opulence. It does easy-going, lived-in, informal, comfortable, friendly. And very well, too.
What you get is an inspired, well-designed development of 20 thatched bungalows. They are set well back from the main street, so noise is not a problem.
Look beyond the resort to the rear and you'll see rainforest leading high into the mountains.
Sit out on the porch at night and listen to the clicks, hoots and whistles of the jungle. What may sound like the quacking of a duck with a sore throat turns out to be a lizard of some sort.
Some of the bungalows at Garden Resort are set around the swimming pool, which has a three-metre deep-end, the deepest on Koh Chang.
The rooms are large, so are the beds and the shower. The sturdy, rustic furniture is made from heavy hardwood from the local jungle.
Garden Resort successfully completes the standard tick-list for today's traveller: free wifi, safe, air-con, TV. And, here's a good idea: a fridge with nothing in it but complimentary water. You can fill it up with beers and juices from the local shops, saving a fair bit on usual minibar prices.
Mause is happy to point you in the direction of the best eating places, island boat trips, elephant treks into the jungle and whatever else you may fancy.
The sea is about 250 metres away. If you go for a swim at 4.30pm you might be joined by two baby elephants.
One innovation since my last visit to Garden Resort is the Backstage music bar, which will get busier as the high season approaches.
I travelled solo but had no problem in making new friends.
Sometimes, chatting over breakfast in the tropical garden setting killed off an entire morning.
Garden Resort is that sort of place.

Room Tip: Rooms with best view are around the pool.

We stayed at Kai Bae Garden Resort in early December 2011 and we could not rate it highly enough! The locale was fabulous - close to the beach, yet very quiet and private, especially by the pool! Mause, the owner, was a great help and good to chat with over a beer or two.

The in-house kitchen made the best we tasted on the island, and their green curry chicken is the best I have tasted – EVER!!! (Ask for tips from the chef!) Next time we will eat in all the time.

The room was great, and they put a mattress on the floor for our 11 year old daughter. She loved the pool, the elephants bathing in the ocean nearby, the elephant ride (recommended by Mause), the kayaking... we all did. This is the best of Koh Chang, with a touch of western service and accommodation.

I promised to write this review months ago, and was inspired by looking at my photos. Mause noted that someone had complained about too much 'garden'. To us, that was part of the charm of it. Do yourself a favour – visit the Garden Resort and stay for a week, or stay forever! Hmmm, now there's a thought!

Room Tip: We had a room by the pool, and we loved just walking from our verandah into the water.

I won't reiterate what other reviewers have correctly noted about the vicinity of Kai Bae, its restaurant choices and vicinity to the beach, etc. nor the tranquil, clean and noise-free location, and the friendly service of the staff at the resort itself. All true, in spades, Mause, the owner -- a Hollander who speaks impeccable English and sports a wonderful sense of humor and storytelling style -- is reason alone to book here and nowhere else on Koh Chang. Especially for first-time visitors like us. We had no question unanswered re best options for restaurants, elephant trekking providers, even laundry and ATMs. Never with the feeling that he was being otherwise than helpful, given his personality. If you stay at the Garden Resort, "you have a friend in the hospitality business on Koh Chang."

Room Tip: Poolside is great if you are going to use it often. However guests with kids and groups of young pe...

Stayed for 16 nights in a pool side room and will definitely return. In particular, we liked the central but quiet location, with a wide choice of good restaurants on the doorstep (both Thai and European), proximity to the beach, the friendly atmosphere, the design of the resort, the pool, and the facilities provided.
Mause, the proprietor, is extremely helpful and even small matters like extra coat hangers and new batteries for a DVD remote control were attended to immediately and with a smile. Mause or his wife is available most of the time to provide useful and honest advice about what to do and the best, most reasonable way to do it.
The resort has a very peaceful, laid back atmosphere which suits our tastes very well. The resort is not standing still, however, and improvements such has new TVs (including a large 3D TV in the lounge area for rainy days) had just been installed.
This was out first time in Koh Chang although we’ve visited many other parts of Thailand and stayed in various types of resort – some more expensive, some less. All things considered, we feel that this is our favourite Thai resort and we hope to return early next year. Can’t say fairer than that!
