After being very disappointed with our original booking for a 10 day vacation on Koh Chang (see review for Bhumiyana) our travel agent booked us into the Tropicana on Khlong Phrao beach and our vacation was saved!!! From the initial contact with the front desk and General Manager we found them to be helpful, friendly, and willing to negotiate to ensure an excellent vacation.
We traveled with our two children (7 and 10) and comfortably shared a superior room that had two good sized beds and a couch/bench that could turn into a bed for one of the kids. The room was spacious, beds were comfortably firm, the decor was warm and clean, and the bathrooms were excellent. The only complaint on the rooms are; showers quickly turn very hot or cold on their own and you risk getting a bit of a burn, and superior rooms are attached to another bungalow and you are able to hear every sound (and i mean ---every!) from your neighbors. Because of this i would recommend you book a seperate Deluxe room to ensure a quiet stay. As we stayed at the hotel over Sonkran --- evenings were invaded late into the night by the constant throbbing of music and bad karoeke from distant bars but that is going to happen anywhere in Thailand these days. Once the holidays were over the evenings went back to being peaceful and quiet.
The grounds are wonderful ---- beautifully landscaped, peaceful, and well maintained. There are no buildings over two stories tall so it does not seem densely populated and everything blends in nicely to the landscape. There are flowering trees throughout the grounds along with nice ponds and other nice touches.
The infinity pool (though on the small side) is very clean, and located right on the edge of the beach. Perfect for the kids and for taking in gorgeous sunsets. It also has a small poolside bar offering a nice selection of drinks. There are comfortable lounge chairs along the pool side and on the beach with a sufficient number of umbrellas for shade. Only small issue is that the many staff circulating around the pool never come by to ask for a drink order or to assist with umbrellas.
On one side of the beach property is a very comfortable beach bar that offers a nice happy hour and plays some great tunes. It is an excellent place to relax before dinner to enjoy a great sunset. Drinks are very reasonably priced.
The breakfast selection is quite good with a decent variety of Thai and western foods. Fruit was usually quite fresh and they have a good selection of cheeses, breads, fresh cut veggies, and a few fellows making omlettes. Only downside to the breakfast selection is the awful coffee and tea. We usually found ourselves up on the main road in the late morning at the Upper Crust (owned by a really nice guy, Paul) that has a great selection of meats, pastries, wines, and coffees.
Dinners at the hotel restaurant are reasonably priced and include a good selection of foods. They also have number of fresh seafood selections that can be grilled to order (great tiger prawns!). The restaurant is right on the edge of the beach and offers a great view and provides such ambiance to the place. Staff at the restaurant were not particularly dynamic but very friendly and accomodating.
Our nine nights at the Tropicana were fantastic! We live in Thailand and have been to many hotels and this one stands out as one of our favorites. I can highly recommend this hotel for families and couples. You will not be disappointed.
