Visiting the elephant treks is one of the must do activities in Koh Chang. There are 4 elephant camps on the island, and this one was recommended to us by the concierge at our hotel, because they do a 2 our trek into the jungle, and the elephants are treated well.
We got there after lunch, and unfortunately they would only do a 1 hour trip, rather than the 2 hour trip we were hoping for. To be honest though, I think an hour on the back of an elephant was probably enough for my back!
The elephants seemed all really happy, and thankfully had no marks on them. The guides were all calm with the elephants and there was never any hurry if they wanted to stop and eat.
Having been on a few elephant rides, this was one of the better ones, as they actually do go into the jungle. Haven read a couple of other reviews when they say that they "just follow a track", I'm not really sure what was expected ... A new track each day? Of course they follow a track, but you're surrounded by real trees, and follow a real river, see real snakes and real spiders! As for elephant dung, where would you expect them to go?! If you want a real experience, they deliver!
We did feel slightly pressured at the end of the trip to buy an elephant tusk necklace from our guide, (apparently from naturally deceased elephants), and also to leave a tip. This a shame, as we would have left a tip anyway, without him having to ask.
The cost is 500 THB each for an hour jungle trek, although prices increase if you go swimming with the elephants, or go on the 2 hour trek.
They provide free water and fruit after your trip which was a nice surprise. They also have a free pick up and drop off service, which we didn't use.
Tip: go in the morning, so you can do the 2 hours, and you'll see monkeys too!
