I spent five nights here with my friends, a couple and their 18 month old daughter. This turned out to be the perfect place for all of us, for me a welcome antidote to the previous four nights in Bangkok.
The rooms were immaculate and lovely, everything in working order and I get the impression this is quite a new resort. The air conditioning works fine, although it was nice and cool in December so I didn't work it very hard.
Staff are very friendly and will do everything they can to look after you. We arrived quite late (about 8 or 9pm) and they cooked dinner for us. Their English isn't always great, but communication is no problem. A few Thai phrases, patience and smiles will do fine, although in my case my friend's wife is Thai so I was a bit lazy with the phrasebook.
It's possible to book an in-room massage for about 300 Baht, although I've had better massages in Thailand and one of the massage people is a guy (my friend found him very good, but best to know in case you have a preference).
The hotel provides scheduled trips to the nearby Bang Bao Pier, but they also were willing to take us there and collect us on an ad hoc basis (but bear in mind it might depend how busy the resort is). It's just over a 1Km walk if you prefer though, and if you take a left turn halfway along the road into a small west-facing bay, along a wooden pathway across the rocks, you'll stumble upon a delightful open-air cocktail bar.
The pier itself is worth two or three visits, once to stroll along the lighthouse at the end, and returning to dine in the different restaurants along its length. There are many boat trips available, although we didn't take one. The pier is also a source of noise at night, but if you can embrace the sound of holiday fun in the distance it's easy enough to sleep.
No beach, but the pool is very nice, complete with a very small and very friendly bar, complimentary sun loungers, towels etc.
Other than that, there's not an awful lot to do here, but that's the point really. Bring a good book, swimming gear and your camera, and let time stand still for a while. Not for everyone then, but for the friendly staff, immaculate facilities and lovely views, I think a 5* rating is deserved.
