Last year we visited elephants' sanctuary in Kanchanaburi. Feeding and bathing were main points of our visit, they don't offer riding. We loved it! This year we decided to stay on Koh Chang and we wanted to repeat our experience with elephants. Actually Baan Kwan Chang was the only choise for us. This is the only camp located in jungle - natural elephants' habitat (unlike the others located close to main road), and is supported by Asian Elephant Foundation. We expected a place similar to the one which we'd visited before - with happy, well treated animals and people being in love with them.
We couldn't be more wrong. Baan Kwan Chang is just a part of elephant industry, place like many, where animals are used to make money. They don't seem to be very happy making 4-5 riding a day (at least 1 hour each) in difficult terrain with heavy bend and three people on theirs back. The high spot of the 2 hrs programm was bathing. About 5 minutes per person - there were two tired elephants and much more people, so we had to change fast.
Definitely not recommend.
If you want to spend some time with these awesome giants, try to find a place, where people take care of animals indeed not only make some marketing.
