“Good value for your money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2009

I came back to Koh Chang for the first time in 5 years. The island changed a lot since then but I still found "my" Thailand there.

When I came last time, there was only the "Alina Resort" located on the beach side, now there is also a bigger hotel complex opposite called the "Alina Grande". Both places belong to a Canadian/Thai-Couple (Dave & EK). Somebody told me that they are a part of the Tourist-industry there for nearly 20 years!

Anyway, some of us stayed in the Resort, others in the Hotel. The Resort is cute and more familiar style. You can choose between single bungalows with a terrace or propper rooms with a balcony. All rooms are very close to the see, have a fridge, air-con and TV and are only a few steps away from the attached Resto. There is also a supermarket and a little beauty saloon part of the Resort.

Pro: Close to the see, cheap prices, friendly reception, good atmosphere and located at the end of the beach where everything is a bit more relaxed than in the center
Con: Not the newest rooms anymore, can be a bit noisy when you are too close to the restaurant or the street

Tip: Take a room with seaview (beautiful!) and get yourself a haircut or manicure/pedicure in the beauty saloon. Very friendly staff there which is doing a great job.

The Alina Grande is only about four years old. The whole Hotel is very spaceious and modern but therefore naturally a bit more expensive than the Resort opposite. But without any doubts it is worth the money: The rooms are huge (as everthing there) and offers all you need. Seems like a lot of Thais are going there too which is always a good sign. There is a also beautiful pool in the back that invites you to hang around - perfect for families with kids. Internet, Supermarket and Resto can be found there too.

Pro: Huge and lovely rooms, very clean, reasonible prices, relaxed atmosphere and what I have never seen anywhere else in Thailand with special facilities on the ground floor (e.g. ramp, toilets) for people with wheelchair or a baby buggy. Located at the end of the beach where everything is a bit more relaxed than in the center
Con: Long ways to walk inside the hotel-complex, not located on the beach side, Restaurant seems to be open only for breakfast which is included but a bit ordinary.

Tip: Take a room with poolview which avoids the noise from the street and offers a nice view.

this is the newer sister hotel to alina resort across the street.
its a big place and i think they might be having a tough time keeping up with the responsibilities...
positives: room we had was very big. decent electric hot water heater (relative to thailand). breakfast allowed until 12 which i think is the right thing for people on holiday. rarely see that.
they only clean room when requested which is ok, especially for those who don't like maids to knock in the morning.

negatives: breakfast quality very cheap. WORST coffee i have ever had. fake orange juice (just orange sugar water).
loys of holes in cieling plugged with toilet paper. unfinsihed construction work on bathroom cieling- very unsightly. tv wasn't working in room. so went down and told them. no one came still. and no phone in room to call . so had to call from my mobile phone (long distance) or walk all the way back down. when maids clean room, every time they neglected the balcony where birds did their nasty business every day, so balcony was unusable. they claimed ours was a 'sea-view' room, but you can barely see a tiny sliver of the sea over the souvenier shops and hotels across the street!
a few front desk staff were ok, but one day there was a queue of 8 to 10 people waiting for assistance, and the poor guy was doing his best while a woman who appeared to be manager or owner sat at the desk behind him snacking away, occaisonally glancing up us, reluctant to help, with a 'not my problem' look...
overpriced for what we got really. at 2500 baht i would definately stay elsewhere next time. also there are cats everywhere in the lobby and breakfast room which isnt good for those of us with allergies! there is a pool which we didnt use as it was at the back of the hotel and we prefer the beach. don't get me wrong, this place wasn't horrible, but it really needs someone to take charge of the details etc. and the price wasn't prportionate to what we got. there are a lot of choices on ko chang and this place doesnt do enough to win you over.
