It was day 3 of my road trip up north. I started early morning from Dehradun to Uttarkashi (took a wrong turn at Mussoorie and ended up driving on a completely broken road for 6 hours), drove up to the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering and then back to Rishikesh. This was just a few months after the terrible floods in Uttarakhand and the roads, while some of the most beautiful and picturesque, were the worst I have ever driven on. In fact, just before Rishikesh, there was a landslide which was being cleared by 2 JCBs to make some kind of a motor-able pass.
I reached Rishikesh well past midnight with no booking in hand. After scouting around for more than an hour, I found The Amaris... Strange name I thought, but I was too exhausted to think any further. The locked gate was opened as soon as I drove up and flashed my lights. The staff at the reception was alert, attentive and pleasant. I checked in within minutes and had a sound sleep (whatever little bit I could).
I had to leave early the next morning and head back to catch a 5 pm flight from Delhi. I requested the staff to pack breakfast for me. They packed some omelet sandwiches and aloo parathas which I enjoyed on the way. I also requested the watchman to wash my car which he did very well.
It was not an extra ordinary 5-star hotel, but very comfortable and one where you would appreciate the basic comforts to ensure a restful sleep. So if you're on your way from Uttarkashi or Gangotri to Delhi and need a place to spend the night, The Amaris is bang on the highway and a great place to halt journey.
