“Great surprise, fantastic food, location, music”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2010

Stayed at Hotel Tamarin for 4 nights in August 2010 on a half board basis. First of all, food was wonderful. Breakfasts ample choice, dinners generally superb (salads were top notch, mains average to good, desserts average to good). Service ranged from OK to good - as you stayed longer they warmed up a bit. The hotel featured good quality jazz bands each night from 8.30 to 10.30 with supporting vocalists on some nights. Excellent. Free internet. Good pool. Adjacent to excellent beach with opportunities for surfing. Popular with locals from Friday arvo through the weekend. Hotel can arrange a limited range of tours and activities plus you can hire a taxi if you want. Excellent location for exploring Central Plateau, south and west, Port Louis. Overall would recommend without hesitation.

Hi!

In Mauritius I saw a lot of Hotels because I'm a Hotel business coach that works with students in Mauritius from the Netherlands.

The warmth and the friendly staff and the nice retro styled rooms are great. But especially the personal approach of the staff is the best and more nice then in any other 5 star hotel I went so far in Mauritius and the world! Congratulations!

I stayed at this hotel for only two days as I was on business. The staff were fantastic and so helpful. I had to leave early for the airport and I got a breakfast pack. I had not even asked for one. The rooms are excellent value and wifi is free. The food is great, the service is great and the hotel is very relaxed. What more could you wish for? There was none of this snobish attitude that you get from the larger and more expensive hotels. And did I mention the price of drinks? London pub prices in Mauritius. £3.50 for a pint certainly does not break the bank. Try the Flamboyant old rum on ice...delectible!!

I was in heaven! Its lovely here - the hotel is brilliant - its really quirky, low key, began life as a surf shack - very authentic with the al fresco bar and restaurant all wood and corrugated iron - the whole place is brightly painted in lovely shades of orange, olive green and purple - original retro furniture in all the rooms! If you are a creative soul you will love it - excellent live music in the Crazy Fish bar each night ranging from laid back jazz to authentic Mauritian dancers and sounds - the place is owned by a musician so there is really good music playing all the time - he has created a lovely vibe here - all the staff appear very happy and friendly - there are really fun activities laid on too - such as kayaking, snorkelling, stretching on the beach (with a lovely french athlete who is representing Togo in the Olympics in 2012!!) - - - food is really imaginative and consistently delicious - i learnt to surf with a very patient and excellent teacher - the hotel dolphin watching trip actually meant I experienced swimming with dolphins for the first time in my life - just me and one other on the boat - it was magical - and the relaxation spa is right there by the pool and I did have the most amazing Shiatsu treatments that I have ever experienced!!

We were in the basic accommodation - which is simple - really well furnished if you are into a retro 70's feel - i saw other rooms which were more expensive and luxurious - so if you want a little more of an upmarket feel go for those rooms. It is set by a lovely beach which is really lively and interesting - there are very few shops and restaurants nearby - but there are always taxis outside and a good bus service to nearby places.

There were quite a few people staying there who had been coming back for years - I think we will definitely be joining them.

I'd go there if I was you !!

We were supposed to spend only 1 night for my boyfriend birthday we finally spent a whole week end there...We particularly like the atmosphere of the hotel...calm & sweet dur ing the day..Nice weather, very good service ..the employees are very cheerful and nice..Very good value for money..The problems we encountered is that we didn't have a minibar in our room, but this was not a real problem...:)..On Saturday nights on the beach which is across the parking, there were much noise since some people come for BBQ...and this disturbed me a little...Above all..we love it..I would highly recommend this small hotel..it's a nice pearl and a good hotel to promote Mauritius, Mauritian Friendliness and pluriculture...

We had a truly wonderful time at Tamarin Hotel the last two weeks.

Location: we travelled acrossed all of Mauritius by car, seen a lot of places and definitely want to stay in Tamarin the next time! The town itself is not that attracting but it's location on the island and the surroundings are!
Beach: good, just across the parking with opportunities to go snorkeling and diving in vicinity. The tourist swamped Flic en Flac beaches are just 5 km away. To the south also some very nice beaches near and surrouding Le Morne.
Hotel: friendly look and nice atmosphere. Free Wifi is available.
Service: great, very friendly and helpfull staff. Even your clothes are neatly folded each morning!
Food: excellent! Varied and really excellent.
Music: each night excellent jazz music by real musicians for real music lovers!
Nightlife: besides the excellent music each night no significant nightlife.
Other: they have a great pool and furthermore PADI diving centre and surf centre on location!

Note: it is not a 5-star resort, but in case you do not want to be locked behind gates and long driveways, this is the place to go to! Excellent value for the price!

Excellent place, really helpful staff. We were travelling with one-yr old baby and they went out of their way to help us. We stayed in one of their delux rooms which was lovely and handy to have more room with the baby. Beach pretty good (better ones nearby) and no direct access from hotel - need to cross car park to get to it. Food was good - entertainment in evening mostly good, the odd slightly naff evening! We would recommend you have a car if you stay here - Tamarin is pretty quiet and there are better beaches to be found along the coast. However, if you don't want to spend a fortune at some 5 star place and want quiet resort, this is a perfect place.
